As the third week of the 2024 Virginia high school football season ends, the Virginia On3 Massey Ratings Top 25 list as of Sept. 16 has remained the same. There were no significant moves on the board, except for Benedictine and Trinity Episcopal School switching places.

The top ten still looks the same, with Maury on top, followed by Freedom and Phoebus. Here’s how the other teams fared after another round of football action.

The On3 Massey Ratings , officially used during the BCS era, is a model that ranks sports teams by analyzing game outcomes, strength of schedule, and margin of victory.

    1. Maury

    Previous: No. 1
The Commodores have won 17 consecutive games, dating back to the beginning of the 2023 season. This year, the defending Class 5 state champions outclassed eighth-ranked Highland Springs 38-7. The Springers had no answers after Maury scored the game’s first 33 points to keep the game out of reach. Head coach Dyrri McCain’s crew finished that game with 401 yards on offense, while Highland Springs had 151. The Commodores could remain undefeated if they defeat seventh-ranked Dinwiddie next week.

    2. Freedom

    Previous: No. 2
The Eagles remain the second-best team in Virginia high school football despite playing zero games. They lost to Coolidge 2-0 due to a forfeiture triggered by game scheduling conflicts. They will finally see action on September 27 against Gar-Field, a game they can easily win, especially if Carleton Preston and Jeff Overton have big games.

    3. Phoebus

    Previous: No. 3
The Phantoms’ defense is fourth-ranked in the state after limiting Highland Springs and Woodside to ten points. Phoebus surrendered only three points to Woodside and even scored a special teams touchdown off a punt return. The Phantoms finished that game with 323 yards on offense and converted seven third-down attempts out of nine tries. Phoebus will try to extend their unblemished run against Heritage (Sept. 20) and Bethel (Sept. 28).

    4. Liberty Christian Academy

    Previous: No. 4
The Bulldogs left doubts to rest after a 41-14 demolition of Franklin County. The Eagles had no answers for running back Gideon Davidson, who finished the game with 12 carries for 146 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Meanwhile, James Deyo added five catches for 147 yards and a touchdown for Liberty Christian. The Bulldogs had 412 yards on offense, while their defense generated two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Liberty Christian can attain a 3-0 record with a win over Amherst County on Sept. 20.

    5. Madison

    Previous: No. 5
The Warhawks have answered the challenges presented to them with flying colors. Robinson Secondary is Madison’s latest victim, limiting them to seven points. Quarterback Cael Yates torched the Rams with 172 passing yards and three touchdowns, while Madison running back Dominic Knicely finished with 99 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Madison can start the 2024 Virginia high school football season at 4-0 with a win over Marshall on Sept. 20.

    6. Oscar Smith

    Previous: No. 6
What’s scary about the Tigers is that they’ve found another gear in their offense. After scoring 44 points against Hermitage and 54 versus I.C. Norcom, they completed a 62-0 shutout triumph opposite Great Bridge. Oscar Smith earned their third victory in as many matches by generating 360 yards on offense and forcing the Wildcats to commit four turnovers (three interceptions, one fumble lost). Oscar Smith will face Nansemond River on Sept. 19 and Grassfield eight days later.

    7. Dinwiddie

    Previous: No. 7
The Generals remain undefeated after dominating the North Stafford Wolverines in the second half of their Sept. 13 encounter. While North Stafford trimmed Dinwiddie’s lead to two, 21-19, in the third quarter, Dinwiddie went on a 14-6 run to settle the final count. However, such a performance might not be enough to secure a victory next week. Instead, they must bring their best game to defeat top-ranked Maury on Sept. 20.

    8. Highland Springs

    Previous: No. 8
The Springers are on a two-game losing streak following their impressive season-opening victory against Manchester. It’s their turn to generate only seven points versus Maury’s second-best defense. They need a boost on offense after finishing with the same number of points versus Phoebus. The Springers can bounce back by defeating Freeman on Sept. 20 and Riverbend a week later.

    9. Matoaca

    Previous: No. 9
After blanking Henrico in their Sept. 13 contest, Matoaca hasn’t surrendered a point after the first two games of their 2024 Virginia high school football season. Bryce Yates dissected Henrico’s defense with 183 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Trevion Mills had 21 carries for 165 yards and a touchdown. Matoaca’s defense contributed three sacks and two interceptions in that dominating performance. The Chesterfield-based high school squad can improve to 3-0 by defeating Massaponax on the 20 th .

    10. Battlefield

    Previous: No. 10
It was a one-sided battle as the Bobcats shut down the Gar-Field Red Wolves while scoring 42 points. Calum O’Shea navigated by offense, finishing with seven completions for 191 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Bryce Banning caught four balls for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, the Battlefield defense kept Gar-Field scoreless by generating 31 tackles (four for losses), two interceptions, and a sack. The Bobcats will try to maintain their momentum as they face Woodbridge in four days.
