Avery Johnson’s big day

Avery Johnson may have had his most complete game as quarterback for Kansas State. The sophomore quarterback totaled over 300 yards of offense and five touchdowns. It was the second five touchdown-game of his career. Johnson really turned it on after an interception in the first half.

K-State head coach Chris Klieman said interceptions do not phase his young quarterback. Klieman also believed Thursday may have been Johnson’s best practice of the season. Klieman, Matt Wells and Conor Riley changed up the game plan to get more throws for Johnson on early downs.

Johnson is still a young quarterback just in his sixth career start. He will continue to get better the more reps he has and more pictures he sees.

Moment that swung the game

Kansas State and Oklahoma State went back and forth in the first half.

However, a major moment that swung the game was an Alan Bowman fumbled snap. After the snap, K-State linebacker Desmond Purnell took Bowman out of the play and Colby McCalister recovered the ball. It led to the Wildcats scoring and taking a 21-13 lead in the second quarter.

The Kansas State defense got another stop after the touchdown.

K-State was putting together another drive, but an offensive pass interference penalty stalled out the drive. The decision to run after the offensive pass interference was to try and pop a run play to be in position to make it third and manageable.

After getting no gain, Klieman was content to run again and get to the locker room.

Kansas State defensive improvement

Oklahoma State was rolling offensively on the first few drives of the game. The Cowboys were able to get in the red zone on its first four drives. After the fumble, the Kansas State defense rose to the occasion and stifled the Cowboys.

Oklahoma State was only able to get in K-State territory three of its next 10 drives. The Wildcats also held Ollie Gordon to just three yards after he had 73 after the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats made more plays in the secondary in the second half. Bowman threw two interceptions, including a major play by Jacob Parrish . Klieman told his secondary to keep battling in the second half and plays were going to come to them. He was right.
