Texas will have a challenge in remaining the SEC’s sole undefeated team

Six weeks into the college football season, just one team from the Southeastern Conference remains undefeated: Steve Sarkisian ‘s Texas Longhorns.

A number of events of varying craziness has led the season to this point. The least crazy of those being Texas taking care of its five opponents of Colorado State, Michigan, UTSA, ULM, and Mississippi State. At no point save for a brief period of time during the Mississippi State game did Texas ever feel like it was in jeopardy of losing the contest.

Texas taking care of business against teams like Michigan and MSU were the expected outcomes and the Longhorns went and got them. Colorado State, UTSA, and ULM were overmatched from the jump.

So let’s enter the craziness.

Eight different teams in the SEC have at least one loss. Texas A&M lost to Notre Dame in week one after a strong defensive effort by the Fighting Irish. Texas A&M showed their quality this weekend by topping previously unbeaten Missouri in dominant fashion.

LSU lost a close battle to USC in Las Vegas, also during the opening weekend.

During SEC play

• Ole Miss lost to Kentucky.
• Kentucky lost to Georgia.
• Georgia lost to Alabama.
• Alabama lost to Vanderbilt.

Outside of that group of schools, you’ll find Tennessee. They defeated the Oklahoma Sooners then turned around and lost at Arkansas coming off of a bye.

Texas fans have learned some of what “It Just Means More” means during their first season as part of the SEC, but that reality has yet to be felt via the direct action of others.

The Longhorns are about to have that tested as they enter their first stretch of meaningful league games as members of the Southeastern Conference. Texas travels to Dallas on Saturday for the annual Red River Shootout against Oklahoma. The Sooners have their faults but so far have just one loss on the season, plus they will enter the Cotton Bowl looking to pull off the upset.

Georgia arrives on October 19. The No. 5 Bulldogs lost their epic battle with Alabama, but by no means are they reeling. UGA pulled away from Auburn for a 31-13 win.

And then there’s Vanderbilt, which has shown high quality play this year under Clark Lea and upset No. 1 Alabama over the weekend.

That’s not even mentioning November battles with Florida, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Texas A&M following the Longhorns’ second bye.

Texas entered the 2024 season with lofty expectations and a confidence it would compete for the SEC championship. So far, the Longhorns have looked the part of a championship contender as the season reaches its midpoint.

They are unique in that they are the last undefeated team in the SEC. That quality will have rivals new and old working to bring the Longhorns to the land of the defeated.
