Three Penn State football true freshmen can no longer redshirt during the 2024 season. The plan all along was for that to be the case with offensive lineman Cooper Cousins and safety Dejuan Lane . Tight end Luke Reynolds was added to that group after Khalil Dinkins was sidelined in Week 1 before Andrew Rappleyea was lost for the year in September. All three officially crossed the four-game threshold to save a year of eligibility when they saw time against UCLA. For the season, Cousins has played 86 snaps at guard and center on offense, per Pro Football Focus . Reynolds has logged 84 on offense. And, Lane is up to 64 on defense in addition to plenty of special teams work.

Beyond those three, one Nittany Lion inched closer to the four-game decision-making mark in last Saturday’s 27-11 win over UCLA . Here’s the latest redshirt report

How did the Penn State freshmen play against UCLA?

We’ll start our rundown with first-year running back Quinton Martin Jr. With junior running back Nicholas Singleton a last-minute scratch against the Bruins, the Pittsburgh native was called onto the game field for the second time this season. He played 16 snaps and was PFF’s third-highest-graded player on offense after carrying once for one yards while also catching three of four targets for 18 yards. Martin Jr., who is now the team’s No. 3 running back when the top two are healthy, also returned the opening kickoff for 27 yards.

“I think the guys we have in the program, if one of our players isn’t playing it, trust me, there is another guy behind them that can step up and be as explosive as he will,” receiver Trey Wallace said. “So Quinton came in there, didn’t miss a beat. We had Kaytron and just really just kept moving.”

Cousins logged seven snaps. Reynolds had 11 reps but had no counting stats. And Lane was credited with four tackles over 30 snaps. Vaboue Toure played in his second game, as well. The safety logged 17 defensive snaps.

First, a reminder: Any member of the roster can play in up to four regular season games and still preserve a year of eligibility. Once you pay in a fifth, you can no longer redshirt. And, most importantly, postseason games do not count against the total. It is a regular season counter only.
