Legacy Motor Club parts ways with crew chief, announces interim plans for Erik Jones, John Hunter Nemechek

Legacy Motor Club announced Tuesday it has parted ways with crew chief Dave Elenz, who has sat atop the pit box for the No. 43 team over the past three seasons.

Ben Beshore, in his first year as crew chief for John Hunter Namechek and the No. 42 team, will move to the No. 43 team as crew chief for Erik Jones. Brian Campe, the newly appointed technical director, will serve as interim crew chief for Nemechek effective this weekend at Charlotte.

Campe is less than one week into his tenure with Legacy, coming over following a three-year stint with Hendrick Motorsports. He notably served as Kyle Larson’s strategist during his Coca Cola 600–Indianapolis 500 double attempt on Memorial Day weekend.

“I’m super excited to join LEGACY MOTOR CLUB and am looking forward to the opportunity and challenge ahead,” Campe said in a statement. “I believe in the vision for LEGACY M.C. and hope to help build on the talent that is already in place and bring my experience to the organization so we can compete for wins at NASCAR’s highest level.”

Legacy Motor Club making changes amid underwhelming 2024 season

Legacy makes the changes with just five races remaining in the 2024 Cup Series season. Both Jones and Nemechek have struggled mightily this season, so a tweak to the operation may not be the worst idea as they prepare to turn the page to 2025.

Jones, who paired with Elenz won the 2022 Southern 500 at Darlington, sits 30th in the points standings with just two top 10s. Nemechek, in his first campaign with Legacy, is back in 34th with three top 10 finishes to his name.

Jones did secure a season-best P5 finish at Talladega on Sunday, hopefully a sign of better things to come.

“Yeah, we had an OK car. We lacked in speed, but it drove good,” Jones said after the race, via Nate Ryan of NBC Sports . “Kind of lucked out in that last wreck there. Felt like the damage wasn’t bad enough that we needed to come in [to the pits]. Happy to get a good run. We’ve just had a rough year and struggled last two weeks, so it’s nice to finish up front.”
