Adam Schefter addresses how Jets owner Woody Johnson’s time as UN ambassador factored into Robert Saleh firing

Woody Johnson’s time as a UN ambassador could’ve factored into the firing of Jets coach Robert Saleh , according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Now, there’s no direct correlation, but it certainly didn’t help after the Jets lost 23-17 to Vikings in London last weekend. Johnson previously talked about expectations not being met , thus leading to Saleh’s dismissal.

But perhaps being over in England was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Johnson.

“Well again, let’s keep in mind he is the former ambassador to the United States in the UK, so he knows a lot of people over there, has a lot of friends there,” Schefter said on Get Up. “When he goes over there and sees his team lose a game like that, I think that makes him even more upset.

“And they were coming off a game in which they lost at home to the Denver Broncos, in a game that a lot of Jet fans did not expect them to lose, when they had a lot of penalties, when they played their poorest game of the year. And I don’t think the owner could have been, or would have been happy after that loss against the Denver Broncos.”

Woody Johnson not happy with Jets’ results

The Davante Adams trade rumors factor in too. With a loss like that, a fired head coach and an under .500 record (2-3), a trade for the star receiver seems less likely right now.

“So it’s hard now to go to Woody Johnson after a loss in a city that he worked as the ambassador,” Schefter said. “(They’ve) now lost another game, he’s probably even more angry than he was last week, he wound up firing his head coach, oh now let’s go spend the money that’s required and needed to go get Davante Adams, when Aaron Rodgers has gotten dinged up the last two games, his knee the week before, his ankle now, everything feels fragile.

“I would think that the owner would be in less of a mindset to go make a bold move like that.”

Johnson certainly wasn’t happy when he released his statement on the decision. Although he thanked Saleh for his contributions to the organization.

“This morning, I informed Robert Saleh that he will no longer serve as the Head Coach of the Jets,” Johnson’s statement began. “I thanked for him for his hard work these past three-and-a-half years and wished him and his family well moving forward. This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction.

“Jeff Ulbrich will serve as our Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season. He is a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team. I believe he along with the coaches on this staff can get the most out of our talented team and attain the goals we established this offseason.”
