Evangel Christian Academy Eagles quarterback Peyton Houston made Louisiana high school football history by compiling stats that will make anyone recheck the box score.

The sophomore quarterback torched the Captain Shreve defense with 817 passing yards and eight touchdowns. It’s the fifth consecutive game this season in which he threw for at least 300 yards.

Meanwhile, he also established a single-game record for a Louisiana high school football game of 53 completions against the Gators. His 817 passing yards is also a state record, crushing the 639 yards tallied by Ponchatoula quarterback T.J. Finley in a 2018 game.

Five of Houston’s eight touchdown throws went to Johnny Casey, including a 27-yard TD pass to beat the halftime buzzer. Houston also imposed his will on the ground by adding 87 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

However, despite Houston’s sensational all-around performance, the Eagles lost in overtime 77-76. Evangel Christian had an opportunity to put Captain Shreve on the ropes after Houston completed a ten-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Green.

Unfortunately, the failed two-point conversion had the Eagles up by six, 76-70. The Gators stole the victory by scoring a subsequent touchdown and an extra point to clinch their fourth victory in six games.

Despite the defeat, Houston’s output highlights why college football powerhouses like Texas, Tennessee, LSU, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss are fighting tooth and nail to recruit him.

But before jumping into the next phase of his football career, Houston would want Evangel Christian to be a contender. From an individual standpoint, Houston has been sensational, collecting 2,598 passing yards and 22 touchdowns in six games.

However, after a 7-5 record in the 2023 Louisiana high school football season, the Eagles are 1-5 and haven’t won at home this season. Sweeping their next four games (Benton, Haughton, Lafayette Christian, and Parkway) will give them an even 5-5 record.

Who holds the record for most passing yards in a high school football game?

Verified reports claim that Davidson Day (North Carolina) quarterback Will Grier holds the high school football record with 837 passing yards in a game. Grier completed that game 12 years before Peyton Houston’s historic night.

Sandwiched between Grier and Houston’s total is Alex Huston’s 822 yards for the Springfield, Missouri-based Glendale High School in 2017. Last year, Hutto (Texas) quarterback and Texas Tech commit Will Hammond had 719 passing yards, the 12 th -most in high school football history. Likewise, Brookwood’s Rodge Waldrop finished a 2023 game with 698 passing yards.

Great job, kid. Take what the defense gives you. With that being said, both defensive coordinators need to be fired also.
