The LSU Tigers did not have a single lead in Saturday’s game against Ole Miss until quarterback Garrett Nussmeier found Kyren Lacy for a 25-yard touchdown in overtime to win the game. Defeating the Rebels 29-26 in Death Valley following the late-game heroics of their emerging star quarterback.

Things were not easy for the Tigers this weekend, but Nussmeier played a pivotal role in never giving up and propelling his team to a signature win to remain undefeated in SEC play. Heroics that his head coach Brian Kelly raved about following Saturday night’s win .

“Look it would have been easier for us to be frustrated, those that watch the game, but Garrett wasn’t frustrated,” Kelly said. “And what we saw at the end was why I thought it was a great growth game. He made the plays when he needed to make them, the big ones.”

Nussmeier overcame several offensive shortcomings and two interceptions by throwing for 337 yards and three touchdowns against Ole Miss. With two of those scores represented by a game-tying touchdown pass on 4th down with 27 seconds remaining and the game-winner in overtime that sent Tiger Stadium into a frenzy.

“Tied the game up right before the game ends and then wins it in overtime. That, to me, is more indicative of what you’re looking for from your offense than the inability to put it in the end zone.” Kelly explained

“We gotta go back and look at the film, maybe we gotta coach a little bit better. Because those players, they believed that they were going to win the game.”

LSU has only played in two conference games this season, and in both Nussmeier led the team to come-from-behind victories. Now sitting at No. 6 in the country with 1,989 yards this season and the third-most passing touchdowns with 18 in six games. As he’ll look to continue leading LSU following their jump from a No. 13 to No. 8 ranking in the latest AP Poll.
