Florida held a 10-0 lead in the third quarter this weekend on the road against Tennessee before things got away from the Gators. Eventually losing in a 23-17 overtime loss that drops their record down to 3-3 on the season with the thick of their SEC schedule right around the corner.

Former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier recently spoke about the team’s latest loss and compared it to the Gators’ 1998 matchup against Tennessee. A 20-17 loss that like this weekend was highlighted by missed opportunities in the red zone.

“Yeah there was a lot of similarities … The other day, four times in red zone, we only got three points. Sometimes when you don’t cash in those opportunities, it can come back and bite you and obviously that’s what happened the other day,” Spurrier said on Another Dooley Noted Podcast . “I mean, we’re just as good a team as Tennessee, easily, and it was at their place.”

There’s no question that Florida hung in there with the Volunteers, a team ranked as high as No. 4 in the AP Poll this season prior to their upset loss to Arkansas . Potentially a few plays or a home-field advantage away from securing a big-time win this weekend.

But there will be plenty of other opportunities for Florida to secure signature wins this season, with four of their last six opponents being ranked. As Saturday’s game overall still served as a point of optimism in the eyes of Spurrier.

“Hopefully we can regroup, and DJ Lagway , I guess he’s our man now and we don’t have to worry about who’s gonna play. He’s it,” Spurrier said. “And maybe we can turn a corner and start scoring all of those times, and not have those 12 guys on the field, and play pretty clean football. And I think we’ll have a chance to have winning season, I really do.”

Starting quarterback Graham Mertz suffered a torn ACL injury on Saturday that will put an end to his season in The Swamp. Fully handing over the reins of the offense to the talented true freshman who has earned playing time this season and will now be tasked with leading the program to newfound success.
