Even with the expansion of the College Football Playoff , Alabama could now be out of it as early as tomorrow night.

Desmond Howard assessed the Crimson Tides’ playoff hopes on ‘Get Up’ on Friday ahead of their game on Rocky Top . With what’s happened with them the last two weeks, he thinks their season is on the line versus the Vols .

“Yeah, I do think that Kalen DeBoer’s team is playing for their season tomorrow,” said Howard. “I know they had the big win at home against Georgia but, as you said, they backed that up with a worse loss against Vanderbilt the next week. Then they didn’t look great a week ago against South Carolina either.”

“I believe that ‘Bama is playing for their season on the road in Knoxville against Tennessee ,” Howard said.

Again, Alabama’s last two outings have them in this scenario on The Third Saturday of October . Even with a win over Georgia, an upset by Vanderbilt and then nearly losing to South Carolina the following weekend has created some concerns about the Tide.

Their schedule after this one also isn’t helping them at the moment. Past this matchup with the Volunteers, Howard sees only one more notable game for them. However, it also one that they could lose with who they’d play and where it’d be hosted.

“After this game , if they lose to Tennessee, the only game that they have on their schedule against a ranked team that could probably give them some points would be against LSU but that game is in Death Valley on the road too,” Howard noted.

At 5-1, Alabama should think they’re fine as far as making the playoff . Still, after the last two weeks and what’s to come in the next four, Howard thinks it’s all at risk for them in Neyland on Saturday.

“I do believe Alabama, despite the fact, like earlier I said, that we have a 12-team playoff system? They would have two losses,” said Howard. “I think that they would probably be out of the playoff – contingent if they lose against Tennessee.”
