VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS UCLA IN HOLLOWAY, INDIANA IN MACKEY

In the first-ever regular-season meeting between the Purdue and UCLA, the Boilermakers earned a gutsy 3-2 victory (23-25, 27-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11). The win not only included the highest hitting % in Big Ten play this season (.325%), but six individual season and/or career-highs along the way.

With the result, Purdue improves to 14-4 (5-2 Big Ten) while UCLA, a team receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), falls to 8-8 (2-5 Big Ten). It was Purdue’s second win in five-set matches (2-1).

Purdue was guided by setter Taylor Anderson’s 51 assists, 12 digs, five blocks and a career-high seven kills. The sophomore was responsible for three kills and a block assist in the fifth set, including a block assist and kill on back-to-back points for the 12-8 advantage. Meanwhile, it was the fourth match this season she’s reached 50 assists and the seventh match with a double-double.

Anderson and the hitters allowed no attack errors in the fifth set, marking the second consecutive five-setter (last: at No. 2 Nebraska) to remain errorless. In fact, in four of the night’s five sets, Purdue’s efficiency was at .308% or higher, and hit over .400 in two.

Eva Hudson led the attack with 24 kills on 56 attacks with two errors (.393%). The outside hitter tied a career-high 17 digs in the outing, the most since her freshman season (17 vs. Illinois, 9/30/22), and went errorless in three of the five sets.

In front of 14,876 fans, the largest crowd ever for a Big Ten regular-season match, the No. 10 Purdue Boilermakers regained the rights to the Monon Spike in sweeping fashion vs. Indiana (25-18, 25-14, 25-9). The match was held in a sold-out Mackey Arena.

Purdue moves to 41-11 all-time in home matches vs. Indiana and has won 20 of the last 22 Monon Spike trophy matches.

The nine points allowed in Set 3 were the fewest ever in the rivalry’s history since 2000 (prior to then, points were scored to 15 instead of the modern era’s 25). Additionally, Purdue went errorless in the third set, hitting .500% (13-0-26). In fact, Purdue has gone errorless in the final set of its match in three of the last four outings (Set 5 at #2 Nebraska, Set 5 vs. UCLA and Set 3 vs. Indiana).

Purdue out-hit Indiana .333 to .061%. Not only did the Boilermakers hold the Hoosiers to a Purdue-opponent season-low, but the mark was the lowest Big Ten opponent hitting % in two years, which last also came at Indiana (.057%).

Chloe Chicoine went errorless in the match, hitting 12 kills on 30 swings for a .400 attack % in her double-double performance with 10 digs.

Meanwhile, like her uniform number, Hudson recorded a team-leading 17 kills with just two errors on 36 swings (.417 %).

Freshman defensive specialist produced a career-high 15 digs, leading the team with 17 receptions. As a team, Purdue posted a perfect reception % and registered nine service aces, third-most in a match this season.

Anderson dished out a double-double behind 28 assists and 10 digs while also leading the team and matching a career-high three aces.

Purdue improves to 15-4 (6-2 Big Ten) while Indiana falls to 9-9 (2-6 Big Ten). The match lasted an hour and 28 minutes.

The attendance record bested the 20-year-old record of 10,927 fans in the #23 Illinois at #2 Minnesota match on October 16, 2004. The Boilermakers now hold two of the top three attendance records for two Big Ten opponents facing each other in the regular season (other: 10,570 fans at Purdue on October 17, 2008).

Currently, Purdue leads the league in kills (970), blocks (196.0), Digs (1,058) and assists (902) and rank second in receive % (94.7%).

Purdue will be back for a pair of home matches next week. First in a midweek showdown, Purdue will host Ohio State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network. Then, Purdue will return to Mackey Arena for its second Mackey match Saturday in a top-10 matchup. The Boilermakers are set to host No. 9 Wisconsin at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

Kiel’s six birdies over her two rounds were the fourth most on the Ocean Club Golf Course. After a 68 in the opening round, Kiel added a 73 (+1) on Sunday to remain under par and atop the leaderboard.

Purdue made 22 birdies as a team, including 14 between Kiel and Jasmine Kahler .

Kahler recorded eight birdies during the tournament, leading the field, on her way to a sixth-place finish (+3) for her third career Top 10 and best performance of the season. The sophomore also played the par 4s 2-under, ranking second just behind Kiel. Her weekend was highlighted by a 69 (-2) in the opening round on Saturday.

Momo Sugiyama carded a 72 (E) for Purdue’s best round of the day, shaving seven strokes off her opening round score and moving 16 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 24th (+8). The Australian made a team-high five birdies to counter five bogeys, and she finished strong by playing the final eight holes 2-under par.

Samantha Brown tied for 24th alongside Sugiyama. The freshman had a roller coaster front nine that featured only one par on her way to a 1-over 37 on that side. She began the day with an eagle on the par-5 second, the first eagle of her collegiate career. After three straight bogeys, Brown bounced back with back-to-back birdies on No. 6 and No. 7. Her final round 76 (+4) contributed to the team score.

Following five fall tournaments, the Boilermakers have put a lid on the 2024 calendar year and wait until the spring of 2025 to return to competition. Starting the spring, Purdue travels west to Gold Canyon, Arizona for the Match in the Desert at Superstition Mountain Country Club (Jan. 27).
