    Bear sighting reported in Onalaska

    2024-06-12

ONALASKA, Wis. (WKBT) -- Residents in Onalaska are reporting a bear sighting Wednesday afternoon.

In a phone call with News 8 Now, dispatch with Onalaska Police confirmed they received several reports of a bear in the area of Quincy Street and Sand Lake Road.

A community post from a user in the Ring doorbell app described the animal as "about 6 foot tall and looking for food."

Police urge residents to leave the animal alone, do not try to approach it if seen. Report any sightings to authorities.

The Wisconsin DNR has been notified and is aware of the sighting.

This comes as residents across the river in Hokah, Minnesota reported bear sightings earlier in the week, prompting warnings from police.

    If you see a bear:

    • Do not try to get closer to the bear for a better look or a picture
    • Make sure the bear has a clear escape route -- don't corner a bear
    • Always watch the bear and slowly back away until the bear is out of sight
    • Get inside if you are near a building or vehicle
    • Leave the area if you are berry picking, hiking, camping, jogging or cycling
    • If you are with others, stay together and act as a group
    • If the bear does not get closer to you, slowly back away, talking to the bear in a quiet, monotone voice
