While the potential impacts of the sawfly are still unknown, most defoliated elm trees can recover from the insect’s feeding. The unique leaf damage pattern left by the larvae can help identify the insect, and the public is encouraged to report sightings to state agriculture officials. Experts are working to learn more about the best management practices for dealing with this invasive species.
