ONAWA, Iowa (KCAU) – The West Monona softball team is preparing for its second year at the state tournament after a 40 game season where the Spartans tacked on 33 wins to their record.

The Spartans started the season strong staying as the only undefeated team in the Western Valley conference.

Five-year starter Kacy Miller at the top of her game this season. She’s currently ranked second in the state for stolen bases at 65 and number one for earning 69 runs.

A lot of talent on the team including fresh face Abby Hiatt who lead the WVC in RBIs and a 1.15 ERA has her sitting third in 2a.

The Spartans stayed strong at the end of the season scoring double digits in their last 3 games to make it to the state quarterfinals. West Monona is now looking to use what they’ve learned from the season to make it to the state championships.

“I think we’ve made big strides as years went on,” said West Monona softball head coach Dan Thompson. “Mixing in some new starters and new players into this lineup, I think we’ve done a really good job of that and I think we’re playing our best softball right now.”

“I think we’ve learned a lot because we’ve seen a lot of different pitchers this year, and I think being able to see multiple types of pitchers is going to make it a lot better for us to go in and see people we’ve never seen before,” said West Monona sophomore third baseman and center fielder Brihanna Hill.

West Monona will open IGHSAU State Tournament play as the number 3 seed facing Audubon on Tuesday at 3 pm at Iowa Central Field.
