July 3, 1924: Excursion to Mack. Island

Lacking a real Fourth of July celebration in the city the towns people are going outside of the community for their holiday entertainment and so the excursion on the Steamer Elva to Mackinac Island, St. Ignace and Les Cheneaux Islands will receive the bulk of the holiday crowd.

The local city council could not see its way clear to appropriate funds for a regular Fourth of July celebration and although there are to be several attractions in the city on that day, such as the horse races and other contests at the driving park and the baseball game at the Lincoln avenue ground no elaborate program of entertainment has been arranged.

The Steamer Elva will leave the McArthur dock at 10 a.m. railroad time returning in the evening at 10 p.m. The lateness of the return trip is caused by the having of the street dance on Mackinac Island in the early hours of the evening. Many excursionists will greatly appreciate the additional hour they will have at the Island to participate in the dance, music for which will be furnished by the noted Fischer’s Orchestra of Kalamazoo.

Those who do not wish to make so long a boat trip can motor to Mackinaw City and take the ferry across to the Island. Or the train will carry them to Mackinaw City where the ferry makes a crossing every hour.

July 5, 1974: Onaway had marijuana gardens

The Onaway Police Department located and destroyed two well cultivated, small garden plots of marijuana Monday.

Police officer Robert Rudy stated that one plot was located on Lynn Street and the other on Seventh Street, both in Onaway. No arrests were made at that time.

Except for samples for lab use, all of the marijuana plants were destroyed.
