ONEIDA, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Around 7:30 a.m. on Friday, July 5, the Syracuse Fire Department Hazardous Materials Response Team (HAZMAT) responded to a chlorine leak at a wastewater treatment facility on Harden Street in the City of Oneida.

Once crews were in protective gear, they went into the room in the facility where the leak was happening and found chlorine in the air that was more than five times the safe limit, SFD said.

The HAZMAT crews were then given instructions by the plant’s staff on how to stop the leak. After working for roughly 30 minutes, the leak was stopped.

There were no injuries as a result of the leak and it was contained to the room with chlorine tanks where the leak started, said SFD.

The Syracuse Fire Department HAZMAT unit was assisted by the Oneida City Fire Department and the Madison County Office of Emergency Management.
