Fentanyl has become one of the top five causes of premature death in Central New York, ahead of stroke and respiratory diseases. Last year, the drug killed at least 152 people in Onondaga County, up from 12 a decade ago. At any time, about 2,000 people are in rehab for fentanyl in the county, and that accounts for just a faction of the number of people using the drug.
