Matt at Black Hall Outfitters in Westbrook told me that the local fishing remains in full summer mode. Bass can almost always be caught, but morning and evening, along with after dark is your best bet. The usual suspects, such as GT eels and other big soft plastics, live eels/bunker, large topwaters, and trolling tubes have been the top producers. There are some nice gator bluefish around as well, but they are scattered quite a bit. Keeper sea bass are becoming more prevalent in 80 feet of water or more on Daiwa SK Jigs. The fluke have been shallower, in roughly 30 to 40 feet of water; you have to weed through tons of shorts, but there’s no shortage of big scup on all the rock piles. Anglers targeting sharks are reporting solid results for threshers, without having to travel too far from home. Don’t be surprised if you find a couple big browns or smaller whites in the mix as well!

We finally have some east winds but unfortunately that’s associated with tropical system Debby moving up the east coast. Fluke fishing has been sub-par for most, but when anglers can find warmer pockets in the ocean some keepers are showing. Sea bass fishing remains excellent as the water temperatures have been in the low 60s at a large portion of the reef and wreck sites. Tog fishing began last week and most of the shops are reporting excellent numbers off the inlet rocks, jetties, and some of the Southern Jersey bridges. Although it’s been a rough go lately with higher winds and seas, the canyons are popping with yellowfin, mahi, and even some marlin. I heard of a few local charters getting action from blue and white marlin. The surf and back bays have a good influx of croakers, kingfish, and some blowfish showing up.

Luckily we have a solid looking weekend ahead of us. Fluke action remains some of the best we’ve seen in a while. The number of fish over 5 pounds being caught is wild! Our shop rigs are getting crushed by quality fish. Add some bait or your favorite soft plastics and you’re in. Even the beaches are loaded with quality fluke. Sea bass reports were the same from everyone—bigger fish are further out. With so many party boats in our waters, the local reefs and wrecks get picked clean quickly. Venture further out and try jigging instead of bait, some larger fish are getting pulled up. Bright-colored bucktails and slow-pitch jigs have been putting up numbers. At the local docks, snappers, kingfish, blowfish, and plenty of blue claw crabs are running around. So much fun for kids, and adults that like to be kids.”

On Tuesday, a whale struck and swamped a fishing boat off the coast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, sending two fishermen into the water. The whale breached the surface just feet from the boat's stern, and it landed with its head on the port-side outboard engine and the boat's transom. The fiberglass boat - far lighter than the whale - immediately flipped to port and dumped the two occupants into the water.
