Staff Picks: Where The Beaver Stadium Goalpost Should Go If Penn State Football Beats Ohio State

So far this season, Penn State football is undefeated, securing the No. 4 spot in the most recent AP Poll.

The next time we see the Nittany Lions playing in Beaver Stadium will be on the first weekend of November against Ohio State. Outside of a miracle by Grant Haley in 2016, Penn State hasn’t been able to get over the Buckeye-shaped road bump in its schedule each year.

Given that Vanderbilt fans dumped the FirstBank Stadium’s goalpost into the river after beating No. 1 Alabama over the weekend, we started thinking about if Penn State finally beat Ohio State, where would Beaver Stadium’s goalpost go in the event of a post-win field-storming?

We don’t need to walk too far with the goalpost to find the right place to put it. Make a statement by leaving the goalposts where the JoePa statue should still be standing .

If Penn State beats Ohio State this season, it’ll be the happiest day on Earth for many folks. So, what better way to celebrate securing a big victory than taking it to the happiest place on Earth?

Imagine you walk into Magic Kingdom in Orlando, Florida, and instead of Cinderella’s castle, you are greeted with Beaver Stadium’s very own goalpost. Instead of waiting hours to ride Space Mountain or get an Instagram-worthy picture with Buzz Lightyear, folks can line up to see the very goalpost that was a part of Penn State history. Sure, it might be quite the venture getting it there, but that’s what makes it more fun.

It’s what Walt Disney and Joe Paterno would’ve wanted.

Jamie Lynch: The Top Of Mount Nittany

If the Penn State faithful ever gets the chance to take down the goalposts after a big win, what better place to bring the uprights than the mountain that defines Happy Valley? A parade up the trails of Mount Nittany, with thousands of Penn Staters lining the slopes, would be a spectacle to behold. I envision planting the goalpost on the summit of the mountain, its presence casting a shadow over Beaver Stadium and our beautiful campus.

Resembling the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, the goalpost would symbolize the religion of Penn State football, one which we all hold dear to our hearts. Plus, it would have real-life Nittany Lions to serve as its guards. I have no doubt that the uprights will stand the test of time, reminding generations of Penn Staters of a signature victory, and eventually becoming one of the New Wonders of the World.

James Russell: Old Main Lawn

My first thought when hearing this idea in our staff meeting was, how do we even get a field goal post out of Beaver Stadium? First, we would also have to beat Ohio State, so that’s important to note. I brainstormed all day and returned to the same place: Old Main Lawn. Just imagine how amazing that picture would be, I can’t think of another place. If Vanderbilt can beat Alabama, No. 4-ranked Penn State can beat Ohio State, right?

Michael Siroty: Ohio Stadium

If Penn State beats Ohio State and storms the field,  fans should return the favor and bring the goalposts to Ohio Stadium. I’m not exactly sure how folks would get it there, but with a crowd of more than 110,000, someone can figure it out. Whether it be on foot, tied to a truck, or on an airplane, I think it has to be done. Beaver Stadium goalposts, in the event of a field storming, have to make their way onto to the field at Ohio Stadium, or at least the parking lot.

Where to take a goalpost…

In a town with so many iconic spots, there are regrettably too few to toss a goalpost. A great goalpost march needs a good drop at the end, that way the post can give a satisfying thud or splash to conclude the celebration. State College, while a Happy Valley, has no such natural steep cliffs or rivers. Therefore, we have to find one we made ourselves.

State College High School’s Memorial Field is probably the best place to march a goalpost. It might be far, but if Vanderbilt can march miles, so can we. It’s got a deceptively impressive drop, especially off of the Nittany Avenue-Fraser Street intersection, and is easy to get to. Everyone could stop by throughout the night to keep the celebration going. Additionally, there are already goalposts there! We wouldn’t want our triumphant goalpost to get lonely, so leaving it with friends is preferable to me.

Oscar Orellana: McCoy Natatorium Outdoor Pool

When we beat Ohio State, we should knock down the goalpost and throw it into the swimming pool near East Halls. Perfect opportunity for a campus-wide pool party. I don’t care how cold it is, WE JUST BEAT OHIO STATE (hopefully).
