Opp City Schools names Edgar as next superintendent

Emily Edgar was appointed by the Opp City Schools Board of Education as the system’s new superintendent during a meeting held at the central office on Monday, July 1.

A 1984 Opp High School alumnus, she holds an educational specialist degree from Troy University.

“Being appointed the superintendent of Opp City Schools means a great deal to me. As a proud graduate of Opp, this position is an exciting opportunity to continue making a meaningful impact on the students, staff, and community. Personally, it represents a culmination of years of dedication to education and a commitment to serving others,” Edgar said.

Edgar replaces Michael Smithart who retired in June following a 32-year career in education. She previously served as the assistant superintendent for 16 years.

“Working in education presents so many opportunities to make a difference, whether it’s through supporting our staff, students, parents, or community. I am excited to lead and inspire positive change within the school district. I look forward to strengthening the relationships with our community parents and students. As superintendent, I want to ensure every student has the resources, support, and encouragement they need to be successful,” she said.

Opp BOE President Walter Burgess said Edgar’s 35 years of experience within the school system put her at the top among the candidates for the superintendent position.

“Ms. Edgar has done a tremendous job for our system in many different capacities over the last 35 years. She has worked out of our central office for the past 19 years and has helped lead and keep us in a great position as a system. She has been a key part of our recent success and is well prepared to lead us,” Burgess said.

Through her experience, the new superintendent said she understands the education field presents challenges at times, adding that her background and knowledge give her the confidence to tackle any of those issues.

“I am a firm believer in proactive planning to effectively navigate the ever-changing landscape of education. My main goal will be to continue to improve academic performance and focus on student-centered learning,” Edgar said.

Edgar said she feels that having a good relationship with school board members is important.

“We consider our school board as an integral part of our team. We must ensure decisions and initiatives are guided in a unified direction that benefits our students, educators, and community,” she said.

She added that she is humbled to serve as the next Opp City Schools superintendent.

“I am deeply grateful for the overwhelming support from my family, friends, colleagues, and the wonderful Opp community. My love for our school system, our students, our dedicated staff, and our vibrant community runs deep. I am committed to serving them tirelessly and standing alongside them as we work together toward our shared goals.”

Edgar expressed appreciation and gratitude to her peers throughout her journey in education.

“I owe this incredible opportunity to the remarkable individuals I’ve had the privilege of working with over the past 35 years. Each year, alongside dedicated colleagues, I’ve learned and grown, always striving to provide the best for our students. I hold the utmost respect for our classroom teachers, support staff, and principals who are the heart of our educational community. Our district is truly blessed to have some of the very best. Opp has been my home my entire life and I have cherished every moment of being part of this community. Go Bobcats,” she said.

She also thanked the parents of students at each of the three schools in the system.

“I am deeply grateful to the parents who entrust us with their children’s education year after year. Parents’ trust motivates us to continually improve and provide a nurturing environment where every student can thrive. To our community, thank you for your unwavering support. Your belief in our schools and your commitment to our shared mission are both invaluable,” Edgar said.
