Orchard Park, NY (WGR 550) – After practice on Tuesday, Josh Allen spoke about how injuries to his shoulder and elbow last season hindered his throwing motion. He had different degrees of pain and now he’s trying to get his mechanics back to where they need to be. Allen said,

“I wouldn’t call it a complete overhaul of my throwing motion, but definitely some things to work on and clean up. Especially with getting long with my arm and with my stride, so just trying to clean that up and anytime you go through something like that, sometimes it’s going to feel really good and sometimes it’s not going to feel really good, but as long as you’re trusting it, and keep working on it each and every day, results will come.”

Now don’t misunderstand what Allen is doing. He’s not changing his style on how he wants to throw the ball, he’s noticed his mechanics are a bit off and he’s trying to get back to where he needs to be. Allen said,

“I wouldn’t say that I’m changing, I’m just kind of refining or tweaking and just trying to make better and I think what happened last year with some pain or discomfort changed how I was releasing and delivering the ball and that’s what the video showed and that’s what I was feeling and you could see it on tape that I was getting pretty low and wide with the ball, so just getting back to some drills and some work that we do before we get into practice that are subtle reminders of where to hold the ball how to turn and where to release it.

“Going back to last year, a couple of tweaks in the shoulder and the elbow, it changes how you throw just a little bit because your body shields itself from pain, so making sure I’m just getting back to how I’m supposed to throw and what my body is capable of doing, so I’m trusting what the data is saying right now and just trying to feel it above all else.”

There are ways to track your throwing motion and the Bills have all the latest methods to help Allen and the quarterbacks. Allen said,

“It’s been big time just mechanically getting it as efficient as possible, meeting with Chris S. who has been here with biometric just digitally mapping out our throwing motions right now just seeing what we can tighten up on and improve on and having that in the back of our minds so when we’re doing our individual work, we’re doing everything that I need to do to be as clean as possible.”

Allen said it’s almost comical to see how he throws now compared to how he threw in college. He said,

“Absolutely, it’s night and day in terms of the type of thrower I am, where I held the ball, where I released the ball, it looks like a different guy, sometimes when I click on YouTube I’ll see a video and I’m like, ‘Who is that throwing the ball’ and it’s me, so it’s kind of gross to look at, but I don’t think it’s gross anymore.”

Allen said these are the things he’ll be working on for the next month while they’re off so when he goes into training camp, he’s ready to go.

Allen also has a room full of new receivers to throw to this season and it’s a process to build chemistry with each and every one of them. He said it takes a while,

“Sometimes it clicks right away and for some guys, it could take a season, it could take three seasons, but obviously the faster we can expedite that process, the better.

“Getting together now through OTAs and making sure we’re going to meet during the summer break that we have, and then into training camp, just make sure we’re talking and have an open line of communication with routes and concepts, what I see, what they see, what they feel, and just trying to listen and improve every day.”

Allen and the team will have another day of mandatory minicamp on Wednesday. Thursday is scheduled, but sometimes coaches cancel the final day.
