South Buffalo police stronger than ever, officials say as they eye new station
About five years ago, the South Buffalo Township Police Department comprised two officers and a lone civilian SUV that was converted for police use. On July 15, the township hired its fourth full-time police officer, at $23 an hour, who, unlike some of his predecessors, will patrol in a purpose-built police vehicle. Township police now have two Ford F-150 Responders and a Ford Interceptor at their disposal.
Rust Belt Books Building Sold, Store Staying
The Buffalo building that’s been home to Rust Belt Books has landed a new owner. While Rust Belt Books remains, the West Side building at 415 Grant St. has been acquired by Tre Gambe LLC, who paid $230,000 for the 2,492-square-foot building, according to July 24 filings in the Erie County Clerk's office.

NEW YORK — More high-quality, affordable housing is coming to Buffalo. State Senator Sean Ryan announced the first step of ‘The City of Good Neighborhoods’ plan to build safe and affordable rental units statewide. $40 million in the state budget was established in New York’s Vacant Rental Improvement Program to create more affordable rental properties for low-income families, notes the Senator’s Office.
Buffalo native coaches USA team as they head to semifinals
BUFFALO, N.Y. — A Buffalo native made his way to Paris for the Olympics this summer as a coach for the U.S. Men's Double Sculls Rowing team. Nathanael 'Skip' Kielt was born and raised in Buffalo and graduated from St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute. Following his college graduation from Rutgers, he began coaching at Canisius University.
Top 3 Candidates to Replace Skinner on Sabres Powerplay
The Buffalo Sabres will have a new-look powerplay in the 2024-2025 season, without bumper forward Jeff Skinner and under new coaching from head coach Lindy Ruff and assistant Seth Appert. The makeover will be welcomed, as the Sabres finished 29th overall in powerplay percentage last season. Buffalo hopes the combination of a new approach and new personnel will vault them back into the top 10, where they finished in 2022-2023.
Meeder's Restaurant Added to NYS Historic Business Preservation Registry
State Senator George Borrello presented the New York State Historic Business award to Meeders Restaurant in Ripley to celebrate their incorporation into New York State's Historic Business Preservation Registry. Established by legislation passed in 2020, the Historic Business Registry includes businesses that have been in operation for at least 50 years and have contributed to their communities' history. Borrello nominated Meeder's Restaurant to the registry in 2023 in recognition of their role in helping shape the history, heritage, and identity of the Ripley community.
