The fastest jigsaw puzzlers in the West will face off in Portland this weekend for the inaugural Portland Jigsaw Masters, a three-day speed puzzling competition held Aug. 2-4. Starting Friday, some 120 individuals, 80 pairs and 40 teams (of up to four people each) will race against each other to complete a jigsaw puzzle. The event is organized by local puzzle manufacturer Portland Puzzle Company.

Contracts raise wages for janitors and security guards
New four-year collective bargaining agreements are delivering raises for about 2,200 union janitors and security guards in Portland. “It’s the largest wage increase we’ve ever won, at least over the last 15 years. State Rep. Maxine Dexter, a Portland Democrat, will serve her last day as a legislator on Aug. 30 to focus on her run for Congress. After four years representing House District 33, which covers northwest and downtown Portland, Dexter appears poised to represent Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District. She won the competitive Democratic primary in May to replace retiring congressman Earl Blumenauer, who’s served the district for nearly three decades. Though Dexter faces Republican Joanna Harbour, an Estacada lawyer, in November, she’s all but assured to win in the district that has more than three times the number of registered Democrats as Republicans.
