With one week left to qualify, only two candidates had filed paperwork to run for three Indian River Shores Town Council seats up for election on the November ballot. Incumbents James Altieri, an attorney, and Bob Auwaerter, a retired Vanguard executive and analyst, are running for re-election, but John’s Island resident Mary Alice Smith, who was elected in 2020, has decided not to seek another four-year term. As of press time Monday, no one had filed to run for that third seat.

Monroe County eyes property tax and budget increase
Property owners in unincorporated Monroe County who do not have a homestead property tax exemption may experience a nearly 9% increase in their property taxes for the 2024-25 fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1.
