    McLeod tops Ore City, Big Sandy in district

    McLeod’s high school basketball program traveled to Ore City on Jan. 30, and all three squads left town with wins.

    Longhorns

    The varsity boys’ team rolled past the Rebels with a 68-35 win.

    McLeod (30-3) had a 14-6 lead after the first quarter and posted a 36-17 lead at halftime. A 32-18 run in the second half gave the Longhorns its 30th win on the season. Kannon Dempsey poured in 21 points with nine boards, Colton Spence recorded 11 points with five rebounds, Jaxon Smith added nine points with seven rebounds, Trey Gant had nine points, Austin McGray had eight points with four steals and four boards, Grayson Owens had six points with four assists and Jase Deaton had four points with four steals and four assists.

    In the JV tilt, McLeod topped Ore City 36-19 with Brayden Bascombe dropping 16 points in the contest.

    Lady Longhorns

    The girls’ varsity team won handily 52-19.

    McLeod had a solid 16-1 lead after quarter one and had a commanding 32-7 lead at the break.

    Kenslee Cross scorched the nets for 36 points, Baleigh Terry added seven, Madison Blair three, Emmalyn Owens three and Jacqulyn Shepherd three.

    On Feb. 2, McLeod hosted Big Sandy and swept the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats after four games.

    Longhorns

    McLeod’s varsity boys’ squad held on for a close 51-47 victory. The Longhorns (31-3) fell behind 1711 after the first quarter but a strong 20-9 run in the second quarter gave McLeod a 31-26 lead.

    Big Sandy jumped back out in front 41-39 after a 15-8 third quarter, but a nice 12-6 run in the final frame by the ’Horns secured the victory down the stretch. Grayson Owens posted 21 points, Kannon Dempsey added 11, Colton Spence 10 and Jaxon Smith six.

    In the JV game, Brayden Bascombe exploded for 15 points as the Longhorns edged the Wildcats 3732.

    Lady Longhorns

    McLeod’s varsity girls’ team had no problem with Big Sandy as they posted a 43-17 win.

    A 23-3 lead at the break set the tone for the Lady Longhorns.

    Kenslee Cross put up a double-double with 27 points and 13 boards, Gracey Vick added four points and four rebounds, Emmalyn Owens had four points, Baleigh Terry had four, Rylee Parker two and Lila McKnight two.

    In the JV game McLeod won 17-9 with Taylor Dees scoring five points.
