The upcoming 'Epic Universe' theme park at Universal Studios Orlando is gearing up to be one of (if not the ) biggest and most ambitious expansions in the resort's entire history. The innovative, multiverse-inspired theme park will introduce several new immersive themed lands to Universal Orlando, and it's all set to open some time next year. Now's the perfect time to start getting hyped!

In an effort to sustain that hype until opening day, Universal Studios has been drip-feeding information about the new lands and attractions that fans will enjoy once Epic Universe is open for business. On June 20, they finally came out with the inside scoop on one of their most daring new lands- the monster movie-themed "Dark Universe."

Finally, one for the monster lovers. Although the designers of the "Dark Universe' land claimed to "tow [the] line of being family-friendly" in the @universaldestinations promo video, they're still leaning hard into the gothic horror and classic monster-movie camp, up to the "dark energy"-fueled gate at the land's entrance. Halloween Horror Nights only runs for a few months every year, but Dark Universe will serve up spooks all year long!

I'll admit, I was skeptical when Universal Studios announced a "Dark Universe" land for Epic Universe . While Universal has an iconic backlog of classic monster movies like Frankenstein, Dracula , and The Wolf Man , their more recent attempts to reimagine these characters in the "Dark Universe" movie multiverse were... not very successful. Rather than merely do a 1:1 rehashing of their recent flops in theme park form, though, it looks like they went back to the drawing board and totally re-"vamp"ed the classic characters again in the brand-new setting of Darkmoor. Glad to see that they're going with a fresh start!

Guests can expect at least two big thrill rides: the Wolf Man -inspired roller coaster "Curse of the Werewolf," and "Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment," an immersive experience boasting cutting-edge technology designed for the express purpose of scaring guests silly. The Monster Makeover Experience , which had a brief trial run at Universal earlier this year, will now be open year-round for guests who want to blend in with Darkmoor's ghoulish locals. There will also be themed dining experiences, roaming monster meet-and-greets, and more.

The promised immersive experience and accompanying concept art are exciting, but it remains to be seen how faithfully they'll execute it all in real life (I'm especially interested in seeing how they pull off The Burning Windmill). Right now, though, horror lovers and monster movie fanatics have a lot to look forward to. While the park is staying within "PG-13" limits for the sake of younger parkgoers, the designers promise that Dark Universe will be a place for daring guests who want to "conquer their fears." Spook-tacular!

    What the Fans Are Feeling

So far, every detail revealed about the upcoming Epic Universe park has been well-received by theme park fans, and Dark Universe was no exception.

"The goths/metalheads are gonna have a field trip there (real)," quipped @fellyghostfacejackson.

"I've got CHILLS, these announcements keep getting better and better!" @srobin13 commented.

"This is how I can enjoy Halloween Horror Nights without the Halloween crowd lol," said @seqwood. Good point- but imagine how intense Halloween Horror Nights would be here, too...

Dark Universe is one of five immersive "worlds" that the upcoming Epic Universe park will center around. The other four worlds are the space-themed hub world "Celestial Park," the Wizarding World of Harry Potter spin-off "Ministry of Magic," the long-awaited " Super Nintendo World ," and "Isle of Berk," which answers the prayers of the many Universal fans who've clamored for a How To Train Your Dragon -themed land for years. There will be something for everyone at Epic Universe- all there is to do now is wait for the official opening date to drop!
