    Friday’s big games

No. 6 Dr. Phillips 26, Lake Mary 21 (final)

    Coverage by Chris Hays

Dr. Phillips coach Rodney Wells was all smiles after seeing his Panthers knock off Lake Mary, the No. 2 team in the Sentinel’s Super 16 Coaches Poll, 26-21 to remain unbeaten.

Talk before the season started was that Dr. Phillips was back (4-0) after going 15-16 over the previous three seasons. Beating Lake Mary (2-2) validated that talk and Wells said it himself.

“Yeah, DP is back, baby,” said Wells, who coached the Panthers to the Class 6A state title in 2017. “These seniors, they’ve been through it. Stanley [Anderson-Lofton], Maliki [Wright] and Mykel [Calixte], they’ve been through a lot, so it’s time to flip it and get some tight wins.”

It was definitely tight, and it came down to defense in the end. After Dr. Phillips scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 70-yard pass from Anderson-Lofton to Calixte to make it 26-21  with 3:45 remaining, Wright and Calixte went to work.

Lake Mary’s standout quarterback Noah Grubbs, a junior who is committed to Notre Dame, picked his spots much of the way in the first three quarters. Uncharacteristically, however, he threw back-to-back interceptions — made by Wright and Calixte — on the Rams’ final two possessions to seal the win for DP.

Grubbs was 15 of 22 for 138 yards and the two picks.

“The defense stepped up. To hold these guys to 21 points is damn near impossible,” Wells said. “I also give credit to the offense, to keep them off the field and hold some drives, taking six, seven minutes off the clock, so they didn’t have a lot of possessions.”

Anderson-Lofton ran the ball 10 times for 60 yards and completed 16 of 21 passes for 232 yards and a touchdown. DP ran for 133 yards.

“This means a lot. We’ve been through a lot these past few years. Two 4-6 seasons and then 7-4 last season, and now we know it’s time to dominate and it’s time to take over the city,” Anderson-Lofton said. “I won’t say we’re back just yet. The only way we’ll be back is if we get that state championship ring.”

Lake Mary’s Isaiah Thomas ran for 74 yards and a touchdown. Mistakes, including three turnovers, proved costly for the Rams..

“I don’t feel good at all,” Lake Mary coach Scott Perry said. “We didn’t play very good football. We turned the ball over, we missed tackles on special teams, blew coverages on defense. Just bad football in all three phases.”

    IN-GAME UPDATES:

Clock runs out and this game is final. Dr. Phillips (4-0) stays unbeaten with a 26-21 home win against the Rams (2-2).

Dr. Phillips takes advantage of a 15 yard celebration penalty on Lake Mary and Tavion Greaves returns the kickoff 56 yards to the Rams 16-yard line.

TOUCHDOWN: Lake Mary makes this trip into the red zone count with a Noah Grubbs 6-yard touchdown pass to Chase Hinshaw. The Rams lead 14–7 with 1:15 to go in the first half.

A dropped ball in the end zone by Lake Mary on fourth down turns the ball back over to Dr. Phillips with 2:30 to go in the second quarter. On the next play, Dr. Phillips fumble is recovered by Lake Mary’s Rodney Joyner. First and 10 for the Rams at the DP 16 yard line.

TOUCHDOWN: Lake Mary gets on the board with a 6-yard Gavin Isaacs run and the game is now tied at Dr. Phillips 7–7, to start the second quarter.

No. 3 The First Academy 41, Delray Beach Atlantic 28 (final)

    Coverage by Chris Martucci

The First Academy defense and special teams forced seven turnovers, including four fumble recoveries, to propel the Royals to the win in a matchup of highly ranked teams.

TFA (5-0) scored 21 points off those takeaways, all coming in the first half, thanks to short-field position. That proved to be the difference as the Sharks (4-1) mounted a late comeback in the second half.

“That was an incredible game plan [by the defensive coaches] and it was executed at a high level,” TFA coach Jeff Conaway said. “That’s a potent offense; they’re scoring a lot of points. To be able to minimize them and turn the ball over the way that they did, that’s wild.”

Hello from TFA. It’s a beautiful evening here at The First Academy as we get set for an epic clash between Central Florida and South Florida.

    BACKGROUND:

The Royals were nowhere to be found in top 10 rankings entering the season but are now No. 4 in the FloridaHSfootball Class 1A media poll after reeling off wins against four teams that had top 10 status in the preseason.

Meanwhile, Atlantic has jumped up to No. 3 in the MaxPreps 5A rankings with four consecutive lopsided wins — including last week’s 42-13 dismantling of Pompano Beach Ely — which two weeks earlier stunned 1A powerhouse Hollywood Chaminade, an eight-time state champ.

No. 4 Seminole 41, Lake Wales 38 (final)

    Coverage by Nate Marrero

A matchup between unbeaten and highly ranked teams lived up to the billing and then some in a game that went back-and-forth to the end. They combined for 45 first-half points.

Controversy nearly struck twice late in the fourth quarter when the Class 7A No. 3 Seminoles (4-0) seemingly recovered a fumble in their territory with under three minutes left in the game. After the Seminoles’ offense took the field, the call was overturned and 4A No. 5 Lake Wales (4-1) got the ball back with another chance at the Seminole 40-yard line.

After the Highlanders earned a first down, Seminole got three straight stops to force a 43-yard field goal attempt by Lake Wales junior placekicker Isaac Rivera. The kick was blocked by Seminole senior safety Juan Berchal with 1:45 to go in the game.

On the block, Lake Wales ran the ball into the end zone and it was originally called a Highlanders touchdown. After the refs convened, they waved off the touchdown and Seminole was given possession at its 1-yard line.

The Seminoles were able to burn the time and take a knee to finish the game.

Berchal forced a fumble and had an interception in the first half.

It was the Michael Clayton show in the first half as Seminole built a 21-3 lead. The junior quarterback threw three touchdown passes in the first half. He connected with senior receiver Xavier Tucker for 37- and 18-yard touchdowns and senior receiver Devin Voltaire for another score.

Tucker also had a 92-yard kickoff return touchdown in the win. Senior running back Khamani Robinson added his own 95-yard kick-return TD.

FIELD GOAL: After a fumble recovery and three costly penalties against Seminole, Lake Wales kicker Isaac Rivera drills a second-chance field goal kick through the uprights from 20 yards out. A second personal foul penalty gave Rivera a redo after missing his first attempt. Lake Wales leads 3-0 with 6:14 left in the first quarter.

    BACKGROUND:

Lake Wales is 31-1 in a three-season spree that began with a 2022 state championship.

Seminole is No. 3 in the 7A media poll. The Highlanders are No. 5 in 4A.

    No. 5 Edgewater 35, No. 9 Apopka 0 (final)

    Coverage by Philip Rossman-Reich

Edgewater quarterback Carter Emmanuel accounted for four first-half touchdowns and the Eagles’ defense posted a shutout to bounce back from last week’s loss to area No. 1 Jones. .

Emmanuel ran for 81 yards on 12 carries for three touchdowns and threw for another 193 yards and a score on 13-for-16 passing to lead the Eagles (3-2) to the victory.

Apopka (3-2) had given up just six points in four games. But the Blue Darters found themselves on the back foot early after Emmanual found Luke Anderton for an 18-yard gain on third-and-nine and then capped the drive with a 5-yard TD run.

The floodgates opened from there as Edgewater put up 28 points in the first half to secure the game.

“It was really just putting pressure on them and taking it off us, so they would have to deal with it so we can keep scoring and scoring and doing what we do,” Emmanuel said.

Emmanuel’s lone passing touchdown came early in the second quarter when he found Semaj Fleming near the sideline for a toe-tapping 16-yard touchdown throw. Fleming had 3 catches for 71 yards.

Apopka’s offense struggled but had chances to score.

The Blue Darters drove into the red zone twice in the second quarter but were foiled initially by a third-down sack from Will Marzolf, one of five Edgewater sacks in the game. Apopka got some life thanks to an interception that was returned into Edgewater territory, but Tyson Davison’s pass on the final play of the first half was incomplete, leaving the Darters in a 28-0 deficit.

Apopka opened the second half with a drive of 10 straight runs to advance to the red zone. But Marzolf again recorded a sack to put the Darters behind the chains and out of scoring range.

“They just kept fighting and kept straining,” Edgewater coach Cam Duke said. “I’m so proud of that group. To get a goose egg, the defense is getting better and better.”

Apopka quarterback Davison finished the game with 41 pass yards on 5-for-21 passing.

Edgewater put a cap on the game with a 30-yard run from Christian Henderson with about a minute to play that activated the running clock and ended the game.

    IN-GAME UPDATES:

TOUCHDOWN: Edgewater (3-2) puts icing on the cake with Christian Henderson busting through the middle for a 30-yard touchdown run with about a minute to play. The running clock expires. Edgewater blanks the Blue Darter (3-2).

Apopka came out of the halftime locker room with some adjustments and used 10 straight running plays to get into the red zone on the opening drive of the second half. But a sack put the Blue Darters behind the chains and they got stopped on fourth down. It was a stalemate in the third quarter. Edgewater leads Apopka 28-0 going into the final quarter.

Apopka missed two opportunities to get on the board. The Blue Darters drove into the red zone before a sack from Will Marzolf knocked Apopka behind the chains and out of field goal range. An interception by Myles Fieldings gave the Blue Darters life with one second left and a late hit on the quarterback on their first attempt brought them to the 15. But Tyson Davison couldn’t connect with Damar’eon Cawthon in the end zone. Apopka trails Edgewater 28-0 at the half.

TOUCHDOWN: Edgewater quarterback Carter Emmanuel delivered his fourth touchdown of the night, his third rushing TD, with a 14-yard power run up the middle. Edgewater leads Apopka 28-0 with 2:16 left in the second quarter.

TOUCHDOWN: Edgewater marched back down the field with Carter Emmanuel finding Semaj Fleming for a 44-yard catch and run to get into the red zone and then finding him for a toe-tapping touchdown along the sideline for a 16-yard score. Edgewater leads Apopka 21-0 with 10:23 left in the second quarter.

TOUCHDOWN: Edgewater’s defense forced Apopka into three and outs in both of its first quarter possessions. The Eagles again capitalize with Carter Emmanuel capping the drive with a 23-yard throw to Luke Anderton and a 14-yard touchdown run, his second TD rush of the game. Edgewater leads Apopka 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

TOUCHDOWN: Edgewater played the field position game after forcing a three and out to pin Apopka deep in its own territory. The Eagles drive 31 yards in six plays capped by a five-yard run from quarterback Carter Emmanuel for a touchdown. Edgewater leads Apopka 7-0 with 3:43 left in the first quarter.

    Thursday’s big game

    No. 1 Jones 34, No. 8 Osceola 28 (OT)

    Coverage by Chris Hays

Jones coach Elijah Williams breathed a huge sigh of relief Thursday night after watching his Tigers (4-0) squeak out an overtime win in Kissimmee.

On the other side, Osceola coach Eric Pinellas could only shake his head and count the what-ifs.

The biggest turn in the game was with the clock winding down in the fourth quarter and Osceola (3-2) driving. Jones stopped star running back Taevion Swint for a short gain on third down from the 11-yard line. In the hurry to stop the clock, Kowboys quarterback Camren West spiked the ball with two seconds left. It was a heads-up play by West, with one exception: It was fourth down, and the ball was turned over to Jones, and after one play, the two teams went to overtime.

In the extra period, Jones scored on Larry Miles’ 1-yard run and the defense held on four plays from the 10-yard line to seal the victory.

“That’s on me,” Pinellas said of the errant fourth-down spike. “He got confused and I was yelling that it was fourth down. But I should have kicked it on third down. I just didn’t want to kick the field goal and give them too much time left.

“It’s done. One thing they can say to themselves is they played against one of the top teams in the state and we had them on the ropes. We probably should have finished it.”

West played well, orchestrating Osceola’s rushing attack that produced 239 yards, including his keeper from 40 yards out that had everyone fooled on a fake pitch to Swint. West ducked around the outside and ran to the end zone to give Osceola a 28-13 lead with 6:31 left in the third quarter.

Jones, however, wasn’t done. Dereon Coleman, who threw for 408 yards and 4 TDs, got the passing game going. Most of the aerial damage was done by Vernell Brown III on the receiving end with 10 catches for 143 yards, but he wasn’t the only one. Miles, Jaquail Smith, Kamari Rivas and Antoine Glover each had TD catches.

“We were down two scores but we just kept fighting,” Williams said. “We kept getting penalty after penalty, but we kept hanging in there. We were fortunate enough to come out on top.”

Jones was penalized 15 times for 150 yards.

    IN-GAME UPDATES:

A pass by Osceola quarterback Camren West pass falls incomplete on fourth down and Jones holds on to defeat the Kowboys 34-28 in overtime.

As play was about to restart, Jones coach Elijah Williams ran down the sideline to call another time out to set up his team’s defense.

Osceola facing 4th-and-goal from the 5 yard line calls a time out trailing 34–28 in overtime.

Osceola now gets its four plays from the 10-yard line.

Jones takes the ball 10 yards from the goal line to start overtime. Larry Miles scores from one yard out on the possession and Jones takes a 34-28 lead. There was a bad snap on the failed extra point try.

A Jones pass completion on the final play of regulation time goes for 20 yards but not enough to make a difference. We’re heading to overtime.

Osceola, in a hurry up as the clock was expiring, mistakenly spikes the ball on fourth down. Jones takes over with 2.9 seconds left in the game in the ball at its own 8-yard line.

A botched punt attempt by Jones at its own 43-yard line gives Osceola the ball with 2:36 to go in the game.

The Jones defense holds on a 4th-and-2 play from the Tigers 43-yard line to take over the ball with 5:02 left in the game. Score tied 28-28.

TOUCHDOWN: Dereon Coleman connects with Jaquail Smith on a 41-yard TD pass. The Tigers add the two-point conversion on a Coleman pass to Larry Miles to tie the score, 28-28, with 10:14 remaining to play.

Osceola leads 28-20 going into the fourth quarter.

TOUCHDOWN: Jones quarterback Dereon Coleman throws to Kamari Revis for a 12-yard TD pass.  Drive was highlighted by a Coleman to Larry Miles pass that went for 68 yards. Miles grabbed the ball out of the air after it was tipped and ran the last 50 yards or so to the Osceola 12. Osceola 28, Jones 20 with 6:51 remaining in the third quarter.

TOUCHDOWN: Two plays after the penalty, Osceola quarterback Camren West fools everybody with a fake handoff and runs around the end for 40 yards for a touchdown. The Kowboys increase their lead to 28-13 with 7:48 remaining in the third quarter.

Jones had Osceola stopped after three plays for no gain, but a personal foul gave the Kowboys the first down.
