Week 6 live report: TFA, Lake Mary, West Orange, Oviedo score district wins

Hurricane Helene’s run up the Florida Gulf Coast left behind damage. But Friday night high school football was back on for Orlando area high schools.

Week 6 revved up early with a big Tuesday game matching Winter Park against the Orlando area’s top-ranked team , Jones (details below). That game was originally scheduled for Aug. 23 but was one of many washed out by stormy weather in Week 1 .

The threat of Helene did force Thursday school closures , but the Friday forecast was good for a Week 6 schedule loaded with important district games.

Due to Polk County canceling school Thursday and Friday, Sentinel Super 16 No. 1 Jones travels to Auburndale for a Saturday 6 p.m. game.

We have reporters providing live updates on key games as they unfold (below) and will be looking for happenings from other contests. Check back frequently to see schedule changes and live updates.

No. 3 The First Academy 39, Orlando Christian Prep 13 (final)

The First Academy’s Salomon Georges Jr. and Dane Thompkins each accounted for three touchdowns as the Royals’ high-octane offense overpowered Orlando Christian Prep, helping the Royals clinch their first district title since 2016.

Georges threw for 214 yards on 11-for-15 passing and Thompkins ran for 135 yards on nine carries for TFA (6-0, 2-0) in the Class 1A District 6 victory.

“I think we are extremely explosive and when you are explosive, you can at times start slow and accelerate,” TFA coach Jeff Conaway said. “This team has proven they can do that when they have to.”

The Royals needed that big-play ability after turnovers and special-teams miscues put them behind the 8-ball early in the game.

TFA opened with a three-and-out and then recorded a 4-yard punt, setting up Orlando Christian Prep (2-3, 1-1) with a short field.

The Warriors got on the board first after a nine-play drive that ended with a 1-yard TD run by Akeevin Anderson. The Royals fumbled on their next play from scrimmage, setting up the Warriors with another short field.

First Academy turned OCP away at the 1-yard line after recovering a fumble, setting up its own seven-play, 99-yard drive highlighted by a 46-yard run from Thompkins and capped with a nine-yard touchdown run.

“I have a lot of confidence in my team and my line,” Georges said. “And our run game was unstoppable for the 99-yard touchdown [drive] that we had.”

TFA kept the fireworks going with a 75-yard pass from Georges to Demetrice McCray to give the Royals the lead for good. McCray ended with 5 catches for 140 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Warriors relied heavily on their ground attack as they tried to eat up possession and keep the Royals off the field. Anderson led the team with 90 yards on 17 carries.

The undermanned Warriors could not keep up as star offensive lineman Demetrius Campbell left the game several times with what appeared to be cramping.

TOUCHDOWN: Salomon Georges Jr. finds Demetrice McCray on a screen pass for a 38-yard score. The First Academy needed just two plays to score after returning the kickoff to the 50 and answer Orlando Christian Prep quickly. The Royals’ two-point attempt fails. TFA leads OCP 26-13 with 1:54 left in the third quarter.

TOUCHDOWN The First Academy fumbled the ball at its own two-yard line trying to run a trick play on their first play of the half. Orlando Christian Prep punches it in on a one-yard run from Thomas Young on fourth down. OCP trails TFA 20-13 with 2:43 left in the third quarter.

Orlando Christian Prep takes the opening drive of the third quarter to the four yard line, set up by a 64-yard run by Akeevin Anderson. But he is stuffed on fourth down to hand it back to TFA.

The First Academy gave Orlando Christian Prep a short field for their first two drives of the night. The Royals conceded only one score and used a 99-yard touchdown drive and a 75-yard touchdown pass to retake control. TFA leads OCP 20-7 at the half.

TOUCHDOWN: The First Academy recovered a fumble at midfield and scored on a 25-yard touchdown run from Dane Thompkins, his second touchdown of the game. The Royals lead Orlando Christian Prep 20-7 with 1:24 left in the second quarter.

TOUCHDOWN: The First Academy defense got a three and out and its offense came out firing. Salomon Georges Jr. found Demetris McCray shaking off a pass interference down the sideline for a 75-yard touchdown throw. TFA leads Orlando Christian Prep 14-7 with 6:53 left in the second quarter.

TOUCHDOWN: The First Academy running back Dane Thompkins scored on a nine yard burst up the middle for a TD. He ran for 71 yards along the way. The Royals tie the score with Orlando Christian Prep 7-7 with 10:06 left in the second quarter.

OCP’s Thomas Young gets the first down but fumbled at the one yard line to end a scoring opportunity. TFA recovers and takes over at its own one.

The First Academy tried to respond to the touchdown, but after a jet sweep pass to Isaac Obrokta, Orlando Christian Prep’s Esaie Cenescar rips the ball out and set up OCP at the 22-yard line. Warriors face a fourth down from the five-yard line.

TOUCHDOWN Orlando Christian Prep took advantage of a short field after a bad punt from The First Academy. The Warriors shrink the game with a methodical 26-yard drive that ends with a one-yard touchdown run from Akeevin Anderson. Orlando Christian Prep leads 7-0 with 4:50 left in the first quarter.

Skies are clear and the turf field is clean for kickoff at TFA.

BACKGROUND:

First Academy, which didn’t make the playoffs last season, rocketed to the No. 1 position in this season’s first FHSAA Class 1A power rankings.

OCP beat the Royals the past three years but is the underdog this time.

No. 6 Lake Mary 52, Hagerty 3 (final)

Coming off back-to-back losses to tough opponents, Lake Mary (3-2, 1-0) got back to its usual self with an offensive eruption in its 7A district opener.

After an overtime loss to Lakeland and a close loss to Dr. Phillips, the early scoring spree gave the Rams the morale boost that they needed with the win at Hagerty (4-2, 0-1).

“We challenged the guys to be more focused, concentrate better on every play, and finish the game,” said Lake Mary coach Scott Perry. “They answered the call. They did a great job tonight.

“We needed a good game like this to lift our spirits and get the bad taste of those two losses out of our mouths.”

Rams quarterback and Notre Dame commit Noah Grubbs did all his damage in the first half — throwing five touchdowns to pace the Rams to a 38-3 halftime lead. He finished 13-for-19 passing for 246 yards, 5 touchdowns and 1 interception.

Running back Isaiah Thomas had 3 touchdown catches. He started with a 44-yard run to set the Rams up for the first TD – which he caught.

Brian Williams Jr. and Tyree Witherspoon also caught TD throws by Grubbs. Jaysen Soto and Gavin Isaacs added rushing touchdowns in the second half.

The Lake Mary defense didn’t allow Hagerty’s offense to get anything going.

Huskies quarterback Caden Mitchell was 9-for-20 for 75 yards passing.

Lake Mary is 8-1 against Hagerty. The loss was 24-22 in 2010.

Lake Mary won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. Hagerty will receive as we get set to go on this beautiful night for football.

St. Thomas Aquinas 50, No. 7 Bishop Moore 15 (final)

Bishop Moore was toe-to-toe in the early going against the state’s No. 1-ranked team, according to MaxPreps. But in a span of 2:37, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (5-1) scored three touchdowns to break an 8–8 tie.

St Thomas had just scored a second touchdown to make it 15–8, when Bishop Moore (4-1) fumbled the ball away on back-to back-plays. The Raiders converted both turnovers into quick touchdowns to turn the game into a blowout.

The scenario demoralized a Bishop Moore team that was moving the ball early on.

Quarterback Bjorn Jurgense of Bishop Moore was reading the defense well and making accurate throws. The Virginia commit completed his first nine pass attempts, but the last of those completions ended up being one of the fumbles, and it zapped the Hornets’ energy.

“You can’t give a great team like them a short field. You can’t give them the ball like that either,” Bishop Moore coach Matt Hedrick said. “We were moving the ball and felt pretty good, tied 8-8 at the quarter.

“But we just made two really incredible turnovers. The ball just really doesn’t usually bounce that way, but it did.”

The second half was played with a running clock per the FHSAA’s 35-point mercy rule.

STA coach Roger Harriott didn’t expect to come to Orlando and make it a rout.

“Not at all. They are a great team and our objective was to get off to a great start and finish strong and we didn’t want to take a moment for granted,” he said. “That score is not a real good indication of who they really are.

“The ball bounced our way a couple of times and we made sure to take full advantage of it.”

Bishop Moore gets two starters back into its lineup tonight, CB Trenton Gunner and DE Peter Cannon. Both were injured in the Hornets’ preseason kickoff classic game against Osceola.

BACKGROUND:

This Catholic schools matchup marks the first time the Hornets have played Aquinas, a Fort Lauderdale juggernaut, for the first time in football.

Aquinas, a Class 5A power this season, holds the FHSAA record with 15 state championships. The Raiders are ranked No. 1 across all eight classifications. The Hornets are No. 6 in 3A.

No. 14 West Orange 25, No. 12 Apopka 7 (final)

After a tightly contested first half, West Orange pulled away to remain unbeaten at 4-0 and 1-0 in 7A District 5 play.

The Warriors led 3-0 at halftime before driving the ball 86 yards for a touchdown on its first possession of the second half. Starting quarterback Brian Dillard accounted for 75 of those yards (37 rushing and 38 passing).

Dillard finished the march with a 12-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Ryne Brown. The Warriors went for two and converted, giving them an 11-0 lead with 3:54 remaining in the third quarter. That drive was critical in the victory.

“The kids brought in and it was a situation where we kept getting to third down and then just getting the first down,” said West Orange coach Geno Thompson. “We took like eight minutes off the clock. That was huge.”

Freshman quarterback Andrew “AJ” Chung came into the game in the final minutes of the third quarter and connected with Brown for a 26-yard touchdown pass. Chung followed that with a short pass to Dillard, which he took 63 yards for a touchdown.

Dillard, a two-way sophomore, finished with 202 yards from scrimmage (87 passing, 52 rushing and 63 receiving yards). He also had an interception in the final minutes of the game.

The win puts West Orange into the district driver’s seat. The Warriors will be at home Oct. 24 for a crucial game vs. Ocoee, which lost to Apopka 10-0 in a season opening game.

The Blue Darters and Warriors are now 7-7 against each other since 2014.

No. 14 Oviedo 52, Wekiva 27 (final)

The Oviedo Lions showed no signs of rust out of the bye week as they rolled past the visiting Mustangs in their Class 6A District 4 game.

Oviedo (4-1, 1-0) has now won four in a row. It has scored at least 40 points in all five games and over 50 points in three of its four wins.

“It starts up front,” Oviedo coach Greg Odierno said. “Our O-line, coached by coach [Jason] Proth, is doing a phenomenal job creating some running lanes for us. You can establish a run early in games, it allows you to call a lot of different plays.“

Oviedo got solid production outside of junior athlete Brock Joyce, who had two touchdowns, and senior running back Chance Nixon, who ran for a score. Junior receiver Deshon Febres and junior running back Emiliano Galarza each had rushing touchdowns in the first half.

The defense stepped up as senior safety Brady Manning had an interception and senior linebacker Joey Gioia recovered a fumble and ran it into the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown at the end of the first half to give Oviedo a 35-7 lead. The Mustangs didn’t cross midfield until there were less than three minutes left in the second quarter.

“That was big time,” Odierno said. “That was our senior captain [Gioia]. We work turnover circuit every week and for them to be successful is really awesome to see.”

Wekiva senior quarterback Jackson Keillor entered midway through the second quarter and had 3 passing touchdowns for the Mustangs (2-4, 0-1), including two to senior Jabari Smith.

Oviedo goes on the road to face Hagerty in a matchup of crosstown rivals next Friday.

Jones (5-0), ranked No. 1 in the Sentinel’s Super 16 Coaches Poll and wearing all black uniforms for the first time, remained unbeaten Tuesday night. But it wasn’t pretty.

Neither Winter Park (2-2) nor Jones players were holding their heads high after this one, as the Tigers slopped their way to the shutout. The defense was feisty and was able to keep the Wildcats out of the end zone, but there seemed to be a lot of confusion on the field for this being a Week 6 game.

Neither offense really got anything going. Both of Jones TD drives were methodical and long. Jaquail Smith and Daunte Wallace scored on short runs and Kason Mullis added a 34-yard field goal to cap all the scoring.

Smith had 26 carries for 150 yards. Jones’ passing game never took flight as Dereon Coleman was 10 of 13 for 124 yards.

Winter Park quarterbacks Grant Conner and WIll Jackson rotated much of the night and combined for 15 of 26 passing for 195 yards and an interception.

On defense, Quinton Evans led the way for Jones with three sacks. Fred Ard and J’veon Bush also had sacks, and Isaiah Simpson recovered a fumble. Ayden Pouncey of Winter Park and Demetre Pryor of Jones both had interceptions. Winter Park got sacks from Mehki Lockhart and Drew Follett.

Jones coach Elijah Williams addressed his team for a long time after the game and expressed his displeasure.

“It’s not surprising. It’s how we practice. It’s what we do in walk-throughs. That’s what we do,” Williams said of his team’s lackadaisical effort. “We, as coaches, are trying to correct it  and it’s been more difficult this year than in any other years. I think we’re the worst 5-0 team in the state of Florida.”

Williams realized, however, that Jones had just played three games in 10 days and after facing Osceola’s rushing offense and going to overtime on Thursday, the Tigers were facing a multi-faceted Winter Park offense Tuesday.

“We only practiced one day for Winter Park, so I can’t complain too much. Can’t be too mad at them,” Williams said. “We’re just glad to get out with a win. Three games in 10 days, that’s tough on our defense.

“But we’re gonna fix this. We’re gonna get this right.”

On the first series of the game, Jones drove to the 6-yard line but Winter Park held on 4 plays and Jones turns the ball over on downs.

Winter Park’s bus transportation to Jones High tonight arrived 45 minutes late, so Winter Park did not get to Jones until 5:45 p.m. for a scheduled 6 p.m. kickoff, severely disrupting the Wildcats pregame warmups.

BACKGROUND:

Proud programs meet for the first time since 2006, when the Wildcats won 33-14 at what is now Camping World Stadium.

The Tigers lost eight consecutive Metro Conference matchups with Winter Park in that era (1999-2006) and had not beaten the Wildcats since they scored a last minute touchdown pass to win 20-17 in 1989.

Both teams are scheduled to turn around and play a second game this week, pending weather.
