Treynor's Osborn crowned Westfair Queen
(Council Bluffs) -- A Treynor High School student was crowned Westfair royalty earlier this week. Monica Osborn was crowned the 2024 Westfair Queen during a coronation ceremony to kick off fair festivities on Tuesday. A senior at Treynor High this fall, Osborn is the student body president and serves on the Iowa State 4-H Council. Osborn says receiving the crown earlier this week meant a lot.

Fired Council Bluffs police officer’s lawsuit accuses city of retaliation, discrimination
(Council Bluffs) A former Council Bluffs police officer is suing the city in federal court, alleging gender discrimination and retaliation. Miranda Adams, 36, who began working for the Council Bluffs Police Department in 2012, alleges she was fired in 2023 after she filed a complaint of discrimination and harassment with the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Circus joins Essex Labor Day schedule
(Essex) -- This year's Essex Labor Day Celebration is a circus--literally. For the second time in three years, the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus joins the annual celebration's lineup of activities. Performances are slated for Friday, August 30th at 5 and 7:30 p.m. at the Essex High School track/field along Highway 48. In a recent interview on KMA's "Morning Line" program, Essex Community Development Director Tess Nelson says the city looks forward to the circus' return Labor Day weekend.

Mullet’s restaurant in Ames set for grand opening Friday
Mullet’s, the newest family-friendly eatery on the west side of Ames, will celebrate its grand opening on Friday. The restaurant, which offers a special mix of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, along with signature bloody marys, is owned by local entrepreneur Miranda Cook and her husband Jordan. The pair has been readying the former West Towne Pub location for a number of weeks, even serving food for select customers beginning last Saturday, as a soft opening of sorts.
DNR: Ethanol plant pollution likely harmed public health for years near Shell Rock
(Des Moines, Iowa) – A report from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources shows an ethanol-producing facility in northeast Iowa expelled excessive pollutants into the air for several years that can cause cancers and other health effects. The Iowa Capital Dispatch reports the DNR recently issued an administrative order with regard to the POET Bioprocessing plant near Shell Rock. The Order says “Actual harm to the environment and public health likely occurred” at the facility, which makes about 140 million gallons of ethanol each year, along with other products from the leftover materials of the fuel production. The excessive pollution was tied to one of those additional products: a protein ingredient for animal feed.

With the many projects scheduled for the IKM-Manning School District this summer, the new superintendent, Dr. Angela Huseman, has been busy ensuring everything is ready for the 2024-25 school year. Huseman was selected earlier this year as a shared superintendent between the IKM-Manning and Tri-Center School Districts, replacing former Superintendent Trevor Miller, who will now oversee the Exira-EHK and Audubon Community School District.
