FOND DU LAC COUNTY – Recreation seekers are finding wet conditions at Kettle Moraine State Forest's Northern Unit, but the land is "doing its job," Friends of the Kettle Moraine State Forest- Northern Unit said.

Storms and other rain events in May and June have caused pooling water in the forest's low spots and more wet conditions throughout the forest, but the non-profit friends group said the wetlands "hold water like gigantic sponges" and prevent flooding from affecting downstream and riverside communities.

Mauthe Lake, for instance, is surrounded by the floodplain forest, collecting water from this season's rain.

"Please have patience as Mother Nature slowly releases water from these flooded locations," the group said. "Let’s hope this pattern of major rainstorms lets up soon."

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, some parts of the forest are closed or modified in light of the flooded conditions.

As of July 1, all bridle trails are closed through at least July 8 because of high water tables, standing water and muddy conditions.

The New Fane and Greenbush mountain bike trails are open, but the DNR advises users avoid the trails for at least 12 hours after any rainfall to avoid damaging them.

Because of high lake levels at Long Lake, the town of Osceola has a standing "No Wake" notice for boaters. For Mauthe Lake, the boat launch road, pier, kayak pier and launch are closed for very high lake levels and will reopen as soon as lake levels recede.

Kayak rentals have been relocated to the north end of the Mauthe Lake Recreation Area, near the large stone vault toilet building.

Campers throughout the forest will notice some campsites are flooded or very saturated. The DNR asks campers keep all vehicles on paved or gravel surfaces at all times to prevent damage and closures.
