    Things to do in Oshkosh this week include start of Winnebago County Fair and Gin Blossoms concert

    OSHKOSH - If you're looking for tractor pulls, a rodeo or a demolition derby, you'll want to visit the Winnebago County Fair .

    Live music this week will have something for all tastes, from jazz to rock and everything in between.

    Here are this week's can't-miss events in the Oshkosh area.

    Winnebago County Fair features rodeo, demolition derby

    The Winnebago County Fair will run July 31 to Aug. 4 at Sunnyview Expo Center, 500 E. County Y.

    This is the fair’s 169th year. Grandstand entertainment, live music, midway games, carnival rides, barns, youth exhibits and more will be featured.

    Grandstand events include a rodeo, tractor pulls and a demolition derby. A wood-carving auction will also be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 3 when you can bid on your favorite sculpture.

    Local bands playing live music include The Whiskey Belles, Eight Second Ride, Brent Bel & The Boys, Grand Union, Rising Phoenix and American Platinum.

    Daily admission is $12 in advance, $15 at the gate. A weekly pass is $30 in advance or $35 at the gate. Note that the weekly pass does not include unlimited carnival rides.

    Oshkosh Area Community Band to perform free jazz concert

    The Oshkosh Area Community Band Jazz Ensemble will offer a bonus concert at 7 p.m. July 29 at the Lake Shore Park Pavilion, 1875 Punhoqua St. It is also the last concert of the summer season.

    Under the direction of Jon Basten, the band will play many jazz standards and dance tunes. The concert is free and open to the public.

    Jazz singer Jane Monheit to make appearance at The Howard

    Vocalist Jane Monheit will offer an Oshkosh Jazz Fest preview concert at 7:30 p.m. July 31 at The Howard , 405 Washington Ave. Guest emcee is Erin Boehme.

    With countless awards and accolades, and more than 20 years of international touring experience, Monheit has performed with some of the greatest musicians, arrangers and producers in jazz. She has collaborated with Terence Blanchard, John Pizzarelli and Christian McBride, among others. Television appearances have included David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, CBS Sunday Morning, Good Morning America, The Tonight Show, The View and many international talk shows.

    Monheit continue to tour around the world, has recorded 12 studio albums and has appeared at venues such as Carnegie Hall and The Hollywood Bowl, and headlined nearly every legendary jazz club on the planet, including such New York City stalwarts as the Village Vanguard and Birdland.

    Concert tickets and the optional pre-show dinner must be purchased separately. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m.

    Gin Blossoms headline Aug. 1 Waterfest concert

    The Gin Blossoms will headline the Aug. 1 Waterfest concert at Leach Amphitheater, 303 Ceape Ave. Opening acts are Toad The Wet Sprocket and Vertical Horizon .

    The Gin Blossoms is made up on Bill Leen, Jesse Valenzuela, Robin Wilson and Scott Johnson. They dominated radio and MTV playlists for most of the 1990s, but took a break from playing together while some members explored solo projects. Some of their hits include “Hey Jealousy,” “Allison Road,” “Found Out About You” and “Follow You Down.”

    Gates open at 5:45 p.m. General admission is $15 before 7 p.m. and $20 after. Standing Room Only VIP tickets are $40. For more information or to purchase advanced tickets, visit waterfest.org .

    Summer music series continue in downtown Oshkosh

    The Live at Lunch concert series continues at the Opera House Square in downtown Oshkosh. Concerts are noon to 1 p.m. Thursdays.

    The lineup for the rest of the season:

    • July 25: Music With Mr. Crowe
    • Aug. 1: Brady Lee
    • Aug. 8: Brewer Street Brass Band
    • Aug. 15: Natural Satellite
    • Aug. 22: Water City Jazz Orchestra
    • Aug. 29: UW Oshkosh Pep Band

    The Music on Main concert series continues into September. Concerts are 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays at the Opera House Square.
