OSHKOSH – The world’s next, best flying car could be in driveways in two years.
Aircraft manufacturer Samson Sky says the new Switchblade may be available by 2026 after moving the latest prototype of the flying sportscar to production phase.
Samson Sky CEO and founder Sam Bousfield showcased a scaled-down and sleeker Switchblade prototype at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh July 23 while detailing changes to the sportscar. AirVenture runs through July 28 at Wittman Regional Airport.

The Switchblade now features bigger 99-square-foot wings and two fans on the tail, which folds into the back of the car in its drive mode.
“We see this as a huge improvement on the original design and, hopefully, it protects the wings and tail on the ground, which is key to the success of a driving and flying vehicle,” Bousfield said.
Bousfield showed a video of the first prototype achieving flight last November while the Switchblade met the company’s ground target of 125 mph.
But Bousfield revealed the car encountered too much drag and didn’t reach 160 mph in cruise mode in the air.
“The new design destroys the misconception that a flying car has to be a mediocre car or a mediocre plane, or both,” Bousfield said.
“We didn’t meet our air targets and that’s a problem for us because we’re high performance in both modes unlike any other flying car out there.”
Along with a pair of fans on its tail, the Switchblade has two wings that fold underneath the car when it is in drive mode.
Bousfield presented a video of the car’s foldout transformation before showing the successful first flight of the first prototype.
The Switchblade is a fully hybrid electric vehicle that also features a 210-horsepower engine with a fuel capacity of 40 gallons.
“It’s something people can use every day if they wish to either driving, or flying or a combination of both,” said Bousfield.
“A respectable 0-60 mph time of 5.6 seconds is projected for the hybrid electric vehicle in ground mode.”

According to the company’s website, Samson Sky has 2,600 reservations for the Switchblade, which was initially listed at $179,000 when the car was priced in 2019.
Samson Sky also plans to develop an AI co-pilot and a pilot training program for owners.
