Pulaski Holds Second Enrichment Day for Students
PULASKI, NY – With the goal of providing students with fun, engaging, and enriching activities, Pulaski MSHS recently held its second enrichment day of the school year. During enrichment days, students do half a day of standard learning and then transition to games, activities, and events during the afternoon. For the spring enrichment day, there were several stations available to students. These stations included jigsaw puzzles, brain teasers, soccer tournaments, Latin cuisine creation, board games, a movie theater, bingo, friendship bracelets, RPGs and Storytelling II, comic book appreciation, vision board creation, arts and crafts, badminton, volleyball, and the art of chocolate tempering. Staff members volunteer to lead or supervise each activity.
OCO Recognizes its Volunteers
FULTON – Oswego County Opportunities (OCO) boasts a volunteer force of more than 1,000 dedicated community members that devote their time and talents each year. In 2023 these volunteers contributed a remarkable 17,988 hours of service. This spirit of volunteerism is what truly allows OCO to continue to help people, support communities and change lives in Oswego County.
Literacy Night Provides Fun Activities For Fairley Families
OSWEGO COUNTY – Fairley Elementary students celebrated National Reading Month in March by reading plenty of books and participating in fun literacy activities. The celebration culminated with a literacy night where students and their families engaged in different activities throughout the school. Students could create their own version of book characters such as Pete the Cat. They made crafts and colored, and even had a visit from the Cat in the Hat.

OSWEGO – Donald Leon Nichols Sr., 91, of Oswego, passed away on April 21, 2024. Born in Danbury, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Leon and Marion (Howyou) Nichols. He worked construction for Dosch King in Newtown, Connecticut. Deer hunting was Don’s passion and he enjoyed raising chickens for many years. Fire Destroys Apartment Complex
SCRIBA – The Scriba Fire Department responded last evening at 5:04 pm to a fire at 38 Birch Lane where a 12-unit apartment building was found to be engulfed in flames. Over 60 firefighters from Oswego City, Minetto, Novelis, Volney and New Haven also responded. Mexico and Oswego Town VFD provided coverage for the surrounding areas.
Program to help teens and young adults quit vaping expands
The program “This is Quitting” is expanding by launching an anonymous texting system catered for teenagers and young adults in New York State to help quit vaping. “Drop The Vape” is a free text-based service for teenagers aged 13 to 17 and young adults aged 18 to 24 to quit the use of e-cigarettes provided by the New York State Department of Health.

Frederick C. Matteson
OSWEGO – Frederick C. Matteson, 72, of Oswego, passed on April 21, 2024, at Albany Medical Center. Born in Oswego, he was the son of Lyman E. and Emma (Craigie) Matteson. Fred graduated from Oswego High School. He worked at International Paper Company for many years in various roles and later was employed by Oswego State University where he was the plumbing supervisor from 2003 until retiring in 2021. Additionally, he worked at the Oswego Speedway for many years as head of security. Fred also volunteered at the Scriba Fire Department, where he served the community as a first responder and eventually as Fire Chief. Fred was the ultimate outdoorsman, who was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved all animals, fostered many dogs with love, and he adored his family.
Fulton Lions Club Organizes Voorhees Park Cleanup
Members of the Fulton Lions Club invite all who are interested in helping to join them from 8:00 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, May 4 at Voorhees Park, to rake leaves, clear brush and clean up trash. Fulton Lion Audrey Avery, who is also Fulton’s 5th Ward councilor, Fulton Lions Past President David Guyer organized the event and ask that participants please bring rakes, leaf blowers, and wheelbarrows to get the job done.
