Southport Central School honors Gaudette with woodland playground
About 100 people gathered Saturday, July 6 at Southport Central School for the ribbon cutting, dedication ceremony, and grand opening of the new natural woodland playground. Principal Lisa Clarke gave opening remarks and was followed by Sarah Sherman, who gave the dedication speech in honor of Ramona Thompson Gaudette, the school’s cook for 57 years. SANFORD, Maine — Two teenage stepbrothers are believed to have drowned Sunday at a public recreation area in Sanford. The bodies of both boys, ages 16 and 17, were found overnight during a search of a local recreation area after they did not return home for curfew, Sanford police said Monday morning in a news release.
Biddeford to clear homeless camps, opens new emergency shelter
BIDDEFORD (WGME) -- Biddeford officials are clearing out homeless encampments throughout the city. They are asking people who live there to move into a new emergency shelter. Last week, Biddeford Mayor Martin Grohman said Seeds of Hope opened its overnight shelter at 35 South Street. About a dozen people have already moved in.
Maxwell's closing strawberry farm in Cape Elizabeth after 51 years
CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine — Popular pick-your-own strawberry spot Maxwell's Farm in Cape Elizabeth says it has decided to close after more than five decades in operation. Maxwell's Farm posted on social media Sunday announcing 2024 will be the strawberry farm's final season after 51 years, citing "no single reason" for its closure, but a "myriad of realities" that had built over time.

ROCKPORT — “The ‘Blues’ will be ready early again this year,” said Coastal Mountains Land Trust, in a news release. CMLT invites everyone to pick berries at Beech Hill Preserve. As CMLT did last year, instead of selling blueberries, it will offer a week of community free picks, from Sunday, July 21 through Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., each day. An evening pick will be held on Thursday, July 25, from 5 - 7 p.m.

BANGOR (WGME) -- A Massachusetts man and a Maine woman are facing drug charges after police say they found fentanyl, cocaine, and crack inside a vehicle in Bangor. Police say they spotted 31-year-old Saquan Gaul of Boston driving on Union Street in Bangor on the Fourth of July. According to police, Gaul did not have a valid driver’s license.
Ricker trustees award $275,000 in scholarships to county graduates
HOULTON, Maine — The Ricker College Board of Trustees held its annual meeting on May 19 at Houlton Regional Hospital with Chair Leigh Cummings presiding. According to Gary Bossie, executive director of the scholarship program, there are currently 137 in-college students receiving scholarships from the board. These are $2,000 scholarships which are renewable annually. The cost to the trustees for the 2024 academic year was $253,000 sent to colleges mostly in New England. All of these students are Aroostook or Washington County high school graduates.
