GMUG seeking public comments on Auburn and Iron City mines
MONTROSE, Colo. (KREX) — The U.S. Forest Service is seeking input on addressing mine waste containing hazardous heavy metals from two mines in western Colorado. The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests’ Ouray Ranger District began a 30-day public comment period on Wednesday to address a report of the engineering evaluation and costs for the Auburn and Iron City Mine sites. The public comment period ends on Aug. 3.

July 4, 1974 – Action by the Ridgway Volunteer Fire Department, assisted by the Ouray County Sheriff’s Department and other volunteers, prevented a fire on a ranch on Log Hill from turning into a potentially dangerous forest fire last Thursday. Mrs. Bill Moon had been burning trash in the yard of her ranch on Log Hill approximately 3 miles southwest of Colona when wind caught the blaze and spread it across into some bales of hay.
