Why Do We Love Outdoor Survival TV? A Producer Weighs In.
Don't miss a moment of the 2024 Tour de France! Get recaps, insights, and exclusive takes with Velo's daily newsletter. Sign up today!. I love outdoor survival shows, and over the past decade have watched far too many episodes of Alone, Naked and Afraid, and of course Survivor, to count. In 2023, I was excited to see Netflix launch its own program, called Outlast. The show added a few twists to the tried-and-true format, namely that contestants wage war on each other through vandalism, theft, and psychological bullying. I wasn’t a huge fan of season one. But after the show aired, I was amazed by how much dialogue Outlast generated on the Internet.

Protecting Our Common Ground
Your favorite outdoor spaces are irreplaceable. Whether you find your connection to nature while hiking in the mountains, picnicking at a city park, or moving cattle on horseback, the outdoors is a place that needs care and protection. The topic of land conservation is where people from many different backgrounds meet and something out of the ordinary happens—they all agree. Hiker and adventurer Myranda Hausheer got to learn this firsthand when she went to visit Welch Cattle Company in Larkspur, Colorado. Here’s what she learned from the experience.
This Campground Host’s Favorite Bear Was Killed. Here’s What She Wishes Campers Knew.
Don't miss a moment of the 2024 Tour de France! Get recaps, insights, and exclusive takes with Velo's daily newsletter. Sign up today!. The night of August 22 began like any other in the Pine City Campground near Mammoth Lakes, California. After an idyllic summer day spent in and around Lake Mary, an alpine lake located a ten-minute drive from town, visitors had returned to their campsites, and were starting on dinner. We can only assume it was also a normal night for the biggest bear in the area, but one that would unfortunately culminate in his death at the hands of wildlife officials, and the unceremonious dumping of his body at a local landfill.
Can’t Find the Right Surfboard? Here’s How to Order a Custom One
Don't miss a moment of the 2024 Tour de France! Get recaps, insights, and exclusive takes with Velo's daily newsletter. Sign up today!. The main reason to buy a custom surfboard is because you can’t find the board you want on a shelf. A custom surfboard is a big step in a surfer’s journey, and it can bring noticeable, tangible benefits to the way you surf and how much fun you have. Ideally, you’ll end up with a board that is a sublime match for your body, style, goals, and the waves you frequent. But it can also be an overwhelming experience (and a not-insignificant investment in time and money), so you want to get it right.

Half of the distance running events—six of the 12 men’s and women’s races between 800 meters and the marathon—saw new Olympic records. The newest supershoes had something to do with it, and the fancy new track probably did too. There’s also a new, more aggressive approach to racing that seems to be spreading. But there’s something else, too, according to Canada’s Marco Arop, whose silver medal performance in the 800 meters, a mere hundredth of a second behind Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya, made him the fourth fastest man in history.
