As captured in images published by the Carbondale Fire District, a mudslide closed Colorado Highway 82 on Sunday morning at about 8:20 a.m. as an estimated 300 feet of mud spread across the road. The mudslide took place in the area of Catherine Store, which is located about three miles east of Carbondale.

In hours following the mudslide, both lanes of traffic were closed and traffic was diverted to County Road 100, which connects through downtown Carbondale. By 4:30 p.m., the road was cleared and reopened.

No injuries were reported related to the incident, but this incident can serve as a good reminder that mudslide season is here in Colorado, typically ramping up each spring. Springtime storms bringing torrential downpours, as well as snowmelt can lead to movement and erosion that can contribute to less stability on steep hillsides.

Never attempt to drive through a flooded area and if you see rocks or mud starting to slide down on a road, treat the situation as if there's more mud or rock on the way.
