Potential for large hail, snow in some parts of Colorado this week

Summer is starting to fade into fall, but monsoonal precipitation isn't over quite yet.

According to the National Weather Service, this could bring numerous showers and storms to Colorado on Wednesday and Thursday, with the high country and Eastern Plains region being particularly at risk. The forecasting service warned of strong and severe storms, with key concerns being large hail and gusty winds, along with locally heavy rainfall.

A report from Summit Daily also cites National Weather Service forecaster Chad Gimmestad as stating that snow could fall in areas above 12,000 feet on Wednesday night. This report is echoed by those featured on Mountain-Forecast.com , which show an inch or two of snow hitting some Colorado fourteeners over the next few days.

Will this snow be enough to impact travel? For most, no – though heavy rain might lower visibility on roadways and cause flooding. But the expected snow is, however, a sign of more snow that will likely soon start falling. This means that outdoor recreators headed into the high country should plan for this possibility, potentially needing traction devices and warmer layers as the state says "goodbye" to summer conditions. Always check the forecast before heading out on the trail.
