WATCH: Hiker finds mountain lion lurking under vehicle after returning from hike

A recently posted video is going viral online, capturing a hiker returning from the trail to find a mountain lion seeking shade beneath the rear bumper of their vehicle.

That's about the whole story there, but this clip serves as an important reminder than animals often seek shade during hot days, too, making it important to check under the vehicle and in truck beds prior to getting back in the front seat after a vehicle has been sitting in nature for an extended period of time.

In Colorado's high-elevation terrain, marmots can be something to look out for, as well as mountain goats. Marmots can be attracted to vehicles due to the smell of the engine and fluids while goats can be attracted to salt that can be present on the vehicle.

The best way to get rid of an animal lurking near a vehicle – whether it's a mountain lion or otherwise – is to utilize the vehicle's horn that honks when the vehicle locks. A whistle can also be helpful, as can tossing small pebbles in the direction of the animal. These actions are often enough to haze an animal off. If it's not, maintain a safe distance and give the animal time to move out on its own. If it's really not budging, contact local wildlife authorities for further assistance.
