Freezing temperatures shut down iconic road that reaches 12,183 feet in Colorado

According to Rocky Mountain National Park, an upper portion of the park's Trail Ridge Road, also known as US Highway 34, has been closed due to freezing temperatures in the area creating dangerous conditions.

As precipitation in the area is freezing, conditions on the road are becoming slick and hazardous. This road can get particularly problematic as it tops out at 12,183 feet of elevation.

The closure is in place at Milner Pass on the west side of the park and Rainbow Curve on the east side of the park, resulting in this road not allowing thru-traffic as is the norm. This also means the famous upper stretch of the route can not be reached.

While this portion of the road closes during the winter season, this closure is temporary. Updates on the status of the road can be found by calling (970) 586-1222.

While a winter storm is blowing into Colorado this weekend , Rocky Mountain National Park should be mostly missed.
