    Man sentenced for 2022 deadly wrong-way crash on I-435 in Overland Park

    KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 32-year-old Lenexa, Kansas man is sentenced for causing a wrong-way crash on Interstate 435 in Overland Park that left an Independence man dead in December of 2022.

    Johnson County District Court Judge Thomas Kelly Ryan on Wednesday sentenced Matthew J. Ryan to 9 years and 9 months in prison for reckless second-degree murder.

    A Johnson County jury found Matthew J. Ryan guilty back in May .

    On Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022, investigators responded to westbound I-435 where witnesses told officers a wrong-way driver entered the highway traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes and struck a vehicle.

    After the impact, the suspect vehicle continued westbound and collided with another vehicle head-on that was traveling eastbound approaching Quivira Road.

    The driver of the second vehicle, identified as 42-year-old Karl Wurtenberger of Independence, Missouri , was pronounced dead on the scene.
