Health officials encourage residents to report harmful algae blooms
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The high temperatures and a large amount of recent rain could make conditions for algae blooms. State officials want you to be on the lookout for algae blooms on your favorite rivers and lakes. As the weather continues to heat up, people across the state will head out to their local lake or river. Health officials are warning, however, to be aware of what looks like spilled paint or scum on your favorite body of water.

MSU offering life-changing boot camp for military veterans
EAST LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - After serving in the military, it can be hard for a veteran to figure out what comes next. Over 100,000 veterans leave the military each year to pursue a college career, but transitioning from the military to college can be tough. Michigan State University (MSU) is partnering with the Warrior-Scholar Project (WSP) to be one of 20 campuses hosting an academic boot camp for U.S. veterans.

Robert Backus was named Lansing police chief by Mayor Andy Schor. Backus, 45, is a 24-year LPD veteran who served as interim chief since Ellery Sosebee retired in June. An assistant chief for two years, Backus started his law enforcement career with the LPD at age 15 as an Explorer. He graduated from MSU’s criminal justice program and holds a master of science degree in criminal justice administration from Ferris State University. Backus was hired as an LPD cadet in 1999 and sworn in as a police officer after completing the 67th Mid-Michigan Police Academy in 2000.

Planning Commission Discusses Tree Removal Process, B&B Definition
The Planning Commission tabled a decision on if it should transfer decision-making powers on tree removals to the Commission on the Environment. At the July 10 meeting, it was explained that commercial property owners go to city staff members, typically a city engineer or Department of Public Works (DPW) employee, to request a permit to remove trees. Trees can also be removed without a permit if they meet an exemption, like being infested with bugs or are diseased.
Multi-township police chase through Mid-Michigan ends in two arrests
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan State Police (MSP) are investigating a multi-township car chase that ended with two people arrested overnight. At 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, MSP said it began in Meridian Township on Jolly Road, where they were chasing a car but stopped the pursuit due to police policy. The car eventually ended up in Lansing, where troopers again attempted to stop it but were unable to.
Man, 19, sentenced in drunken driving deaths of 16-year-old sister, friend
LANSING, MI – A 19-year-old man has been sentenced in the drunken driving deaths of his 16-year-old sister and her friend, WILX reports. Lily Klages and Amanda Blue died in a car crash around 3 a.m. on Aug. 26, 2023, the report said. Elijah Klages, then-18, was driving. His blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit. He was driving 60 to 80 mph in a 25-mph zone when he crashed into parked cars in Holt.

Suspect in shooting near Ypsilanti park still at large
YPSILANTI, MI -- Police are still looking for a person suspected in a shooting in Ypsilanti’s Depot Town. Police were called to the 500 block of Rice Street around 11:30 p.m. Monday, July 15, for a report of shots fired, Tom Koch, Ypsilanti Police Department spokesperson, said, adding that officers spoke with a male victim at the scene, who was uninjured.
