These things are literally prehistoric, being around for centuries. These apex predators are adaptable and able to survive through all sorts of conditions. Alligators can get massive too, reaching over 1,000-pounds at their most and measuring over 15 feet long in some cases.

These things have one of the most powerful bites in the whole world, which can reach of 2,000 pounds per square inch. On top of that they can sprint at speeds of 35 miles per hours for a short distance, but far enough to capture prey with their death bite.

Naturally, a massive one isn’t the thing you want to see trotting through your yard or neighborhood. But that’s what folks who live in Florida and Louisiana, and a few other places, have to deal with on a regular basis. And there’s not much you can do about it.

Sand, particularly when dry, is highly unstable and can collapse suddenly, trapping and suffocating victims within minutes. Unlike avalanches, where trapped individuals can form air pockets, sand’s heavy grains fill all spaces, leaving no room to breathe. Rescue efforts are complicated by the sand’s weight and instability, necessitating swift and precise actions to prevent further collapse. Experts recommend keeping hole depths to no more than 2 feet and maintaining vigilance. From 1997 to 2007, collapsing sand holes caused 31 deaths in the U.S., primarily among young boys. Holes as shallow as 2 feet have proven fatal. To prevent such tragedies, always fill in holes after digging and stay cautious of existing pits. As enjoyable as digging may seem, the hidden dangers far outweigh the fun. Stay safe and prioritize awareness over thrill.

A man died in police custody Sunday after he was arrested when he scuffled with firefighters and police, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
