The Owatonna Aces looked to bounce back on Monday night and avoid losing three straight home games after losses to the Wanamingo Jacks and the Dodge County Diamondbacks over the weekend.

The faced off against the Austin Blue Jays on Monday night, with the game starting late and lasting only seven innings. After falling behind early, the Aces quickly tied the game up and took the lead, as they won 6-3 over the Blue Jays.

Owatonna Huskies and Owatonna Legion Post 77 coach Tate Cummins took the mound for the Aces, as he was the starting pitcher after his Legion squad won against Byron right before the Aces game.

Cummins, who is on the Aces squad but does not regularly play for them due to his other baseball duties, pitched a solid outing, going four innings and giving up only two runs, which were both in the first inning.

The Aces headed into the bottom of the first behind 2-0, but they quickly scored runs of their own. Four straight walks to start the inning allowed a run to score for the Aces, and a sacrifice fly by Ayden Walter scored another run to tie the game up.

Both teams had a scoreless second inning, as Owatonna scored two runs in the third to go ahead 4-2. The bottom of the third started with a leadoff single by AJ Vandereide, with Vandereide going to second after a single by Chris Homuth and then going to third after a hit-by-pitch to Ayden Walter to load the bases.

A walk to Gavin Saxton scored a run and an infield hit by catcher Tate Hermes scored for the second run of the inning.

The bottom of the fourth was similar to the bottom of the third as the Aces loaded up the bases with one out. A double by Ayden Walter scored two runs as the Aces took a 6-2 lead over the Blue Jays.

Gavin Rein came into pitch for the Aces in relief for Cummins in the fifth inning. The Aces used a total of four pitchers in the seven-inning game, with Clay Leidell coming into pitch for the sixth inning and Theo Giedd pitching in the seventh.

The Aces did not score in the fifth and sixth innings, but they did not need to as the Aces relief pitchers just allowed one run in the seventh to win against the Blue Jays 6-3.

Both teams had similar stats when it came to hits and errors, as Austin had four hits to Owatonna’s five and Austin had two errors to Owatonna’s one. The factor in Owatonna’s win was walks, as Austin gave up nine walks to the Aces.

Notable contributors to the Aces’ offense were Mitch Seykora and Gavin Saxton, who also played in the Owatonna Legion’s game that took place right before the game. Seykora had a single with three walks and Saxton had a walk and an RBI.

Other notable Aces players on offense were Matt Seykora who had two walks and an RBI and Ayden Walter. Walter was the contributor of three RBIs as he hit a two-run double and an RBI walk.

The Aces are set to take on the Austin Greyhounds on the road Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. If they win against the Greyhounds, they will face the winner of the Dodge County Diamondbacks and Cannon Falls Bears game and if they lose, they will face the loser of the Diamondbacks and Bears game. Their next game will either be on Saturday at 4 p.m. or at 7 p.m, depending on the outcome of the game against Austin.
