The Owatonna Huskies girls soccer team has started its 2024 on a win two games, lose two games pattern, and its win against Chaska on Saturday continued that streak.

After winning against Mankato East 2-1 at home last Thursday night, the Huskies returned to the Lincoln Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon to face off against the Chaska Hawks at home. The Huskies’ defense was once again stellar, winning 2-0 to put their record at an even .500 at 4-4.

The weather conditions weren’t perfect for the afternoon game, as rain filled the air off and on in Owatonna all day Saturday. But it wasn’t enough to postpone the game, as the match-up still went on with the conditions being muggy.

The Huskies had the ball to open up the game, but Chaska quickly stole it and forced a shot to start the game, but Owatonna’s senior goalkeeper Anna Mollenhauer was able to knock it away.

That was one of the rare opportunities Chaska had at a goal in the first period, as the Huskies were able to control the field and were at the Hawks’ side of the field for the majority of the period.

Owatonna senior Kennedy Schammel had a couple shots at the goal and a couple opportunities to score, but they came up just short. The Huskies ended the first period with 8 shots compared to the Hawks’ 1.

The start of the second period was a different story compared to the first period, as the Hawks were the one to put pressure on the Owatonna goal.

Chaska kept Mollenhauer busy, but she along with Owatonna’s defense were stellar and were able to keep up with Chaska’s advances.

With just over 12 minutes remaining in the game, a shot by Chaska was knocked out away and out of bounds by Owatonna senior Alia Kubicek. The throw in by Chaska afterwards was intercepted by Owatonna and led to a goal by Schammel assisted by her 8th-grade sister Presley Schammel.

Chaska tried to respond to the goal with one of their own, but Mollenhauer picked up another save to keep the score at 1-0.

Kennedy Schammel contributed to another goal late in the game with three minutes remaining, this time assisting senior Averi Vetsch to put the Huskies up 2-0.

The Hawks had a few good shots at scoring after the Huskies’ second goal of the afternoon, but Mollenhauer once again made key saves to earn the 2-0 shutout. This is Mollenhauer and Owatonna’s second shutout win of the season.

In the last three games, Owatonna’s defense and Mollenhauer have been lights out, giving up just two goals in the span. The Huskies will look to continue their dominance and reverse their season pattern and pick up their third straight win on Tuesday night in Rochester as they take on Century. Their next home game is Thursday night against Rochester John Marshall.
