A busy week proved a successful week for the Owatonna girls swim & dive team, which won its first home meet Thursday and finished high at a multi-team meet Saturday.

The Huskies traveled to Mankato Saturday to participate in an invite at Mankato East, just two days after winning their first home meet of the year against Rochester John Marshall. The Huskies performed well at the invite, tying for third place with St. Peter out of seven teams.

The Huskies started their first home meet of the season with a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay. Afton Torabpour, Kalleigh Malecha, Krin Eickhoff, and Christina Bell finished in 2:04.58 and Owatonna also had the third and fourth placed teams in the category.

Owatonna had three other first place finishes with Krin Eickhoff in the 200 yard IM, Eickhoff in the 500 yard freestyle, and Anna Hagenson in the 100 yard breaststroke. The Rockets won the remaining nine events, but that wasn’t enough to win the meet as Owatonna won 94-87. JV also won against the Rockets 129-12.

The Huskies then traveled to Mankato to compete in the Cougar Relays, a multi-team invite at Mankato East. With a fifth place finish at last year’s invite, the Huskies improved this year and tied for third place with the St. Peter Saints. Mankato East took first place while Austin took second.

The invite’s events were all relays, with there being no individual categories. While the Huskies just had first-place finish, they had enough other good finishes to score 306 points. Only Mankato East and Austin had more with 362 and 338. The junior varsity team also placed third, with just four JV teams competing.

The Huskies’ lone varisty first-place finish came from the 300-yard relay 3x100 breaststroke, with Kalleigh Malecha, McKenna Abrahams, and Avery Born finishing with a time of 3:58.92, just over two seconds more than the second-place finish team of Mankato East.

The Huskies will have another home meet this week on Thursday as they will take on the Northfield Raiders. They will travel to St. Peter on Saturday for another invite, which will have them compete against St. Peter, Tri-City United, and Waconia.
