Postseason play has already begun for tennis teams around the area, and the Owatonna girls tennis team competed in the Big 9 Conference tournament Saturday and moved on to the section tournament Tuesday.

While none of their singles and doubles players finished in first place in their brackets at the Big 9 tournament, the Huskies did win all of their matches Tuesday night, as they played in the first round of the section tournament. They won against the Tri-City United/Cleveland Co-op 7-0.

Owatonna had only one of their positions not have a bye, as the number 1 doubles team consisting of Hannah Nelson and Lauren Nelson played in the first round of their bracket on Saturday. They won their first match in two sets against Winona before losing their second match against Rochester Mayo.

The Huskies’ number two and number three doubles teams faired better, as Harper Shives and Greta Veldman finished in third place in their bracket while Gabi Navarro and Haley McNett finished in second place in their bracket.

The singles players were a similar story to the doubles players for Owatonna when it came to their placing in their brackets, as their number two, three and four singles players finished in the top four of their bracket, while their first player did not as Emma Herzog faced stiff competition in the conference.

Ellery Blacker placed third, Patty Jo Procopio placed fourth, and Genevieve Froman placed third in their brackets.

Rochester Mayo dominated the tournament, as six of the seven positions that won were from Mayo. Rochester Century had the other win, as Owatonna’s only losses from the regular season came from those two teams.

The Huskies bounced back right away after their performance at the conference tournament on Tuesday, where they had their first section tournament matchup against the Tri-City United/Cleveland co-op at the Owatonna High School courts. The Huskies won 7-0, with all of their match wins just lasting two sets.

The Huskies will return to their home courts on Thursday as they take on Stewartville at 4 p.m in the next round of the section playoffs.
