Macy’s emerges from takeover attempt
After a months-long parade of shocking closings at Westfield Montgomery mall, this week we have some good news about who’s staying open: Macy’s. The 166-year-old department store chain has successfully fought off a hostile takeover that would likely have resulted in the sale of its valuable real estate portfolio. Instead of being dismantled, Macy’s says it can now carry out a turnaround plan that includes closing some 150 underperforming locations (not ours) and upgrading the stores that remain (probably ours). Macy’s also is overhauling its collection of private-label brands, including the introduction of several new lines (On 34th and State of Day so far) and the just-announced relaunch of kids’ brand Epic Threads. More new lines will be rolling out in the months ahead.

Police: 1 dead after Prince George’s Co. crash
A man is dead after a two-vehicle crash that happened Thursday afternoon in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, according to Prince George’s County police. Officers responded to the area of Central Avenue near Brightseat Road around 1:30 p.m., according to a news release from police. At the scene, they found one driver, identified as 69-year-old Zachery Cummings of Bowie, suffering from trauma in his vehicle.

Washington, D.C. Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Second Degree Murder in Fourth of July Shooting
A Fourth of July celebration turned tragic last year has culminated in a 20-year prison sentence for a D.C. man. Brandon Smith, 38, has been sentenced after pleading guilty to second degree murder while armed in the death of Charles Stanton, 43, also from Washington, D.C. The sentence, announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department, was handed down by Superior Court Judge Marisa Demeo and includes a subsequent five-year period of supervised release, and a requirement for Smith to register as a gun offender.
