OWOSSO — It may be the dog days of summer, but it's almost time to start planning for a Christmastime trip to the "north pole."
Tickets for the Steam Railroading Institute's annual North Pole Express steam train excursions from downtown Owosso to Ashley, and back, are set to go on sale at noon July 25.
The 4½-hour excursions, typically pulled by the famed Pere Marquette 1225 steam locomotive, which was adapted to animation for the "Polar Express" movie starring Tom Hanks, steam out of town starting the weekend of Nov. 23.
Excursions take place each weekend until Dec. 22. Most days include two trips (10 a.m. and 5 p.m.) to Ashley, where a Santa's village is set up at the Ashley Country Christmas. The event also includes rides, vendors and food stands.
"Put on your favorite pajamas or 1940s/50s attire, and join us on the North Pole Express for a nostalgic journey to the Christmas of yesteryear," the railroading institute said on its website. "Upon arrival at the Village of Ashley Country Christmas, disembark for a two-hour Christmas party straight out of the past. Participate in the numerous activities the village has to offer, including live entertainment, having your picture taken in front of the train, and meeting Santa Claus himself."
Tickets are $80 or $105 per person in coach or deluxe. Club tables for four are $500. A caboose can be rented for up to 12 people at $2,200, or parties of up to 26 can rent a private car for $6,200 with champagne and baileys provided.
People can get into the mood with the SRI's Christmas in July event from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. July 20.
The free day includes various displays, caboose rides, a hobo camp, a visit from Santa and movies.
