Oxford, AL – Choccolocco Park, already renowned as one of the region’s premier sporting venues, has been added to the Alabama Birding Trail network. The Oxford trail is now part of the Appalachian Highlands trail, one of eight trails located across the state.

The 300-acre site, which features natural bird habitats including grasslands, fields, woods, a lake, and a creek, has documented 188 species of birds. According to ebird.com, a website updated regularly by bird watchers, 127 different species have been observed at Choccolocco Park since January 1 of this year.

The Alabama Birding Trails are a collaborative effort by the Alabama Tourism Department, the University of Alabama Center for Economic Development, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and Alabama Audubon. Joe Watts, a member of the National Audubon Society’s board of directors, expressed enthusiasm about the new addition. “We’re very excited to welcome Choccolocco Park to the Alabama Birding Trails program,” said Watts. “The location has been a favorite for birders for several years. The easy walking trails along the lakeshore offer views of herons and egrets, and the convenient location just off the interstate means more time birding.”

Choccolocco Park offers various amenities to ensure bird watchers and nature enthusiasts have a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The park is located at 954 Leon Smith Parkway and is open to the public daily from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. Access to the park and its trails is free of charge.

For those looking to explore the natural beauty and diverse bird species of Alabama, Choccolocco Park now stands as a prime destination on the Alabama Birding Trail network.
